African and African American Studies
West African Adinkra symbol of life-long education and continued quest for knowledge.
The Department of African and African American Studies (AAAS) at Fordham University was founded in 1969, making it one of the oldest departments of its kind in the nation, and one of the most admired for the quality of its faculty and graduates. The department serves dually as an academic unit and a community, comprised of students and faculty interested in the interdisciplinary study of Africa and its diaspora. The department places a strong emphasis on preparing students for graduate and professional study – as well as careers in public and community service. AAAS supports the important components of its academic program with a wide range of symposiums, conferences, and community/cultural events that are presented during the University calendar.
The goal of the Department of African and African American Studies is to prepare its majors and minors to become global citizens, scholars and social activists who are sensitive to the demands of an increasingly diverse American society and world.
