There are various opportunities for scholarships
and internships in the fields of Irish Studies.
Scholarships/Awards
Thomas and Anne Hughes McLoughlin Fellowships
The Institute of Irish Studies is pleased to announce that, thanks to the generosity of William J. McLoughlin, FCRH '58, it has awarded two summer fellowships of $5,000 each for research on a subject in Irish or Irish-American history. Both graduate and undergraduate students enrolled at Fordham University were eligible to apply. Fellows are expected to prepare a paper for publication and present their research at seminar hosted by the Institute of Irish Studies in the fall semester of 2008.
The fellowships will be awarded to:
Ann Kaiser, a sophomore at Fordham College Rose Hill, who will undertake research on asylum seekers in contemporary Ireland.
John Lash, a PhD student in Early Modern Irish History will carry on research on his dissertation on “surrender and regrant,” the misunderstood process whereby Henry VIII sought to bring to submission Irish lords.
We congratulate these students and look forward very much to showcasing their efforts next fall. And we deeply thank William McLoughlin for this generous encouragement to young scholars. |

Irish Language Scholarship
Summer 2008
The Institute of Irish Studies, Fordham University, in conjunction with the Irish government (the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs), is pleased to offer scholarships to two Fordham students for the study the Irish language in Ireland at the National University of Ireland, Galway in Summer 2008. Students will have the unique opportunity to study at the University's Irish Language Centre (Árus Mháirtín Uí Chadhain) in An Cheathrú Rua (Carraroe) in Connemara, Co. Galway. Apart from being a region renown for its great physical beauty, Connemara is one of Ireland's largest and most vibrant Gaeltachtaí (Irish speaking districts) and is endowed with a rich folk tradition. The village of An Cheathrú Rua in the heart of the Connemara Gaeltacht offers the ideal location for learning Irish in its natural environment. The course, worth 6 credits, will run from the 18th July to the 15th August 2008, and is available at various levels: complete beginners, elementary, intermediate and advanced. Each level will include:
- Daily intensive academic instruction in spoken and written Irish by NUI, Galway professors.
- Special classes in traditional Irish singing and dancing.
- Introductory lectures on relevant topics including Irish History, Literature, Folklore and Society.
Accommodation will be provided in modern private houses with Irish-speaking families living near Árus Mháirtín Uí Chadhain and the village of An Cheathrú Rua.
The Irish language Scholarship covers the cost of tuition in Árus Mháirtín Uí Chadhain, accommodation, and a contribution to a flight to Ireland and other expenses. The total scholarship is valued at $4,250 (approximately €3,000) per student. The scholarship is open to all Fordham students registered at the time of application.
How to apply:
Students must complete the Irish Language Scholarship Application form, available from the Institute of Irish Studies or Professor Maginn, room 913a, Lincoln Centre Campus. It can be requested electronically by emailing maginn@fordham.edu. All applications, however, must be completed manually and returned to Professor Maginn as hardcopy.
