GSAS RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIP
The GSAS RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIP is, ideally, the first of the substantial financial awards an excellent doctoral student would receive. The assistantship provides support for students who wish to work closely with faculty mentors as research assistants on projects associated with their dissertation topic(s). The grant is awarded on a competitive basis and will reward students who have presented papers at conferences, published articles or book reviews, and submitted proposals for external fellowships. The stipend for a 2008/2009 Assistantship is $19,600 in addition to a tuition scholarship.

SENIOR TEACHING FELLOWSHIP
The SENIOR TEACHING FELLOWSHIP is, ideally, the second of these awards a doctoral candidate might receive. The award is designed for the student who has already completed a teaching fellowship within his or her department and has demonstrated effective teaching skills. The student’s application must include evidence of this effectiveness as provided by teaching evaluations (SEEQ) and a letter from his or her teaching mentor. The stipend for a 2008/2009 Senior Teaching Fellowship is $23,000 in addition to a tuition scholarship.

ALUMNI DISSERTATION FELLOWSHIP
The ALUMNI DISSERTATION FELLOWSHIP is, ideally, the third and final award an excellent doctoral candidate would receive. The student may apply for this award only after the department has accepted the proposal and the dean has approved the dissertation title and committee. The fellowship allows the student to devote full-time work to the dissertation and is meant to enable him or her to complete it during the fellowship year. The stipend for a 2008/2009 Alumni Dissertation Award is $24,200 in addition to a tuition scholarship.

GSAS SUMMER FELLOWSHIP
The GSAS SUMMER FELLOWSHIP provides support to students who wish to devote the summer to work on articles for publication, conference papers, and proposals to apply for prestigious fellowships. Recipients of the fellowship are required to present papers at the annual GSAS Student Research Weekend. Any doctoral or masters student may apply, regardless of whether he or she has been nominated for one of the larger awards. The stipend for a 2008/2009 Summer Fellowship is $4,000.

RESEARCH SUPPORT GRANTS
Travel Grant: For masters or doctoral students who have completed 24 credits by the time the grant begins. Grants cover 100% of the costs (up to $1000) incurred in travel to present papers at national and international conferences and in travel to research sites. In the past the following types of projects were funded: (awards are not limited to these but for example)
-presentations of papers at conferences
-presentations of posters a symposia/conferences
-travel to attend special programs to become more proficent in an area of research
Dissertation Expenses Grant: For doctoral students at the dissertation stage (post comps). Grants (up to $2500) cover special expenses students may incur to improve the dissertation (from excellent to outstanding) and to increase the competitiveness of an application for external funding. Please note that standard expenses associated with the dissertation are not covered by these grants, (i.e. photocopying costs) nor is the acquisition of any software or equipment that the University owns. Travel expenses (described above) may be included. These grants differ from the Alumni Dissertation Fellowships in that they cover expenses but do not provide stipends. In the past the following types of projects were funded (awards are not limited to these but for example)
-travel to and/or residency at libraries or archives that will make dissertation exceptional
-residency expenses associated with travel to libraries or archives
*Please note that photocopying expenses or other costs associated with normal dissertation expenses will not be considered.
ELIGIBILITY
Application for GSAS Research Support Grants is open to GSAS students in good standing with satisfactory academic progress according to the guidelines established by GSAS. These grants are awarded on a competitive basis, and recipients of these grants will be expected to present papers/posters at the Annual GSAS Student Research Weekend.
APPLICATIONS
All applications must follow the suggested format as explained on the application and include:
- The application form (see link above)
- A curriculum vitae
- A project narrative specific to the request (see cover sheet for details, limit to 2 pages double space, 12 pt font with 1 inch margins)
- For Dissertation Grant: One paragraph (200 words) explaining how the funds requested will increase the dissertation from excellent to outstanding, and how funds would make an application for external funding more competitive
- A letter of recommendation from the mentor or a faculty member. Note to mentor/faculty recommender: Please include the following in your letter of recommendation: how will these funds aid the applicant in increasing his or her ability to obtain external funding and a position in his/her field. Please limit to one page.
- A letter or other documentation indicating that the work has been accepted by the conference organizers (if appropriate)
- A budget request and justification (1 page). Please explain how the funds requested will be used and how the estimates were derived.
- Files submitted should begin with the student's last name followed by CV, Narrative, Recommendation, Documentation, Budget, Travel or Dissertation application (for example : Smith_CV_Travel08S)
DEADLINE
April 15 and November 17
REVIEW AND SELECTION PROCESS
Each application will be evaluated by the Distinguished Fellowships Committee that will make its recommendations to the Dean. Applicants will be notified of the result of their application by letter approximately one month after the deadline.
PROCEDURE
All recipients of Research Support Grants must submit their receipts for reimbursement to the GSA office no more than 30 days after the expenses are incurred.
FOLLOW-UP REPORT
All fellowship recipients must submit a report on activities and any work produced (conference paper, poster, article, etc) as a result of receiving the grant within 30 days of completion of the project proposed in the application.
