The GSAS is pleased to support the research efforts of students with the following grants:

GSAS RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP (formerly RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIP)
(Due to department/program by january 15, 2010)
The GSAS RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP is, ideally, the first of the substantial financial awards an excellent doctoral student would receive. The fellowship provides support for students who wish to work closely with faculty mentors to develop their own dissertation research projects or to learn methods or procedures that they will use on their own dissertation research. The grant is awarded on a competitive basis and will reward students who have presented papers at conferences, published articles or book reviews, and submitted proposals for external fellowships. The stipend for a 2008/2009 Research Fellowship was $19,600. Click here for more details on this award.
SENIOR TEACHING FELLOWSHIP
(Due to department/program by january 15, 2010)
The SENIOR TEACHING FELLOWSHIP is, ideally, the second of these awards a doctoral candidate might receive. The award is designed for the student who has already completed a teaching fellowship within his or her department and has demonstrated effective teaching skills. The student’s application must include evidence of this effectiveness as provided by teaching evaluations (SEEQ) and a letter from his or her teaching mentor. The stipend for a 2008/2009 Senior Teaching Fellowship was $23,000 in addition to a tuition scholarship.

ALUMNI DISSERTATION FELLOWSHIP
(Due to department/program by january 15, 2010)
The ALUMNI DISSERTATION FELLOWSHIP is, ideally, the third and final award an excellent doctoral candidate would receive. The student may apply for this award only after the department has accepted the proposal and the dean has approved the dissertation title and committee. The fellowship allows the student to devote full-time work to the dissertation and is meant to enable him or her to complete it during the fellowship year. The stipend for a 2008/2009 Alumni Dissertation Award was $24,200 in addition to a tuition scholarship.

GSAS SUMMER FELLOWSHIP
(due to department/program by December 1, 2009 or March 22, 2010) dEPARTMENT/PROGRAM Deadline DATES
The GSAS SUMMER FELLOWSHIP provides support to students who wish to devote the summer to work on proposals to apply for prestigious fellowships. In disseminating these awards, the highest priority will be given to summer projects designed to prepare a student to apply for prestigious fellowships, and to improve a student’s professional credentials (beyond the normal expectation of the program). Recipients of the fellowship are required to present papers at the annual GSAS Student Research Weekend. Any doctoral or masters student may apply, regardless of whether he or she has been nominated for one of the larger awards. The stipend for a 2008/2009 Summer Fellowship was $4,000.

Travel Grant:

For masters or doctoral students who have completed 24 credits by the time the grant begins. Grants cover up to $1000 of expenses incurred in travel to present papers at national and international conferences and in travel to research sites. In the past the following types of projects were funded: (awards are not limited to these but for example)
-presentations of papers at conferences
-presentations of posters a symposia/conferences
-travel to attend special programs to become more proficent in an area of research

Dissertation Expenses Grant:

For doctoral students at the dissertation stage. Grants (up to a total of $2500 on applications throughout one’s graduate career) cover special expenses students may incur to distinguish the dissertation in its field nationally or internationally and increase the competitiveness of an application for external funding. Please note that standard expenses associated with the dissertation are not covered by these grants, (i.e. photocopying costs)nor is the acquisition of any software or equipment that the University owns. Travel expenses (described above) may be included. These grants differ from the Alumni Dissertation Fellowships in that they cover expenses but do not providestipends. In the past the following types of projects were funded (awards are not limited to these but for example)
-travel to and/or residency at libraries or archives that will make dissertation exceptional
-residency expenses associated with travel to libraries or archives.
* Photocopying expenses or other costs associatedwith normal dissertation expenses will not be considered.

FOLLOW-UP REPORT
All fellowship recipients must submit a report on activities and any work produced (conference paper, poster,article,etc) as a result of receiving the grant within 30 days of completion of the project proposed in the application.

Prestigious Fellowships- External
The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences actively supports applications by qualified students for prestigious fellowships offered by external grant organizations for graduate research at various levels, particularly dissertation research. These organizations include the Fulbright Commission, the Council for European Studies, the Department of Education, the National Security Education Program, the National Science Foundation, the American Association of University Women, and the Rotary Foundation.
Qualified students interested in developing and improving applications for these and other prestigious awards should contact Dr. Regina Plunkett-Dowling in the Fulbright & Graduate Fellowships Office.
