RESEARCH SUPPORT:  dissertation expense grant

Dissertation Expense Grant Application Deadline:   April 2, 2013  *02/06/13: Please be informed that we are implementing a new application process starting this semester. Updated application instructions could be found in the corresponding section below. For doctoral students at the dissertation stage. Grants (up to a total of $2500 throughout one’s graduate career) cover special expenses students may incur to distinguish the dissertation in its field nationally or internationally and increase the competitiveness of an application for external funding.     In the past the following types of projects were funded (awards are not limited to these but for example): ·         travel to and/or residency at libraries or archives that will make dissertation exceptional ·         residency expenses associated with travel to libraries or archives Application Instructions:  *02/06/13 Update: Please be informed that we are implementing a new application process starting this semester: 1. Prepare the following documents: ·   Curriculum Vitae ·    A project narrative (not to exceed two double spaced pages), which should succinctly explain the objectives, methods, and original contribution of the dissertation project, and the progress up to date, including:  -Dissertation title (tentative or confirmed) -Status of dissertation proposal  ·  If travel expenses are requested, give either the significance of the conference (with documentation of acceptance) or the significance of the research site for the project ·  Curriculum Vitae ·  Budget Request and Justification ·  Documentation of Acceptance (if appropriate) **Files should be submitted electronically as WORD files to your Department or Program by deadline, and should begin with the student's name followed by CV, Narrative, Rec., Doc., Budget, Travel or Dissertation Application (e.g. Smith_CV_DISS13S) 2.   Ask for a Mentor’s or Advisor’s letter of recommendation (via email): Please ask your mentor or adviser to discuss how will these funds aid the applicant in increasing his or her professional socialization or ability to obtain external funding and a position in his/her field? Please ask them to limit the recommendation to one page.The student should arrange for the mentor or adviser to submit a letter of recommendation electronically directly to the Department or Program by the deadline date. 3.   Fill out the online application form and attach all the required documents IF YOU ARE READY TO APPLY, CLICK HERE. Considerations You Should Make Prior to Requesting Funds to Present Your Work: ·         Have you thought about other applications for this research? ·         Have you organized your research in such a way that you can accomplish everything you need to for your dissertation in the planned trips and to minimize number of trips needed? (i.e. if you need to trave lto London, can you complete two projects in one trip and travel once instead of twice?)     **Please note: Standard expenses associated with the dissertation are not covered by these grants (e.f. photocopying costs), nor is the acquisition of any software or equipment that the University owns. Travel expenses (described above) may be included. These grants differ from the Alumni Dissertation Fellowships in that they cover expenses but do not provide stipends.
