Applying to the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences
Fordham University’s Graduate School of Arts and Sciences is a selective school. The selectivity rate for Fall 08 admissions was 53% for M.A./M.S. students and 20% for Ph.D. students.
The main criterion for admission into Fordham’s GSAS is the clear indication that the student has the ability and motivation to pursue graduate study successfully, evidenced by undergraduate or graduate work, letters of recommendation that speak to the student’s ability to do graduate work, statement of intent, a writing sample, and GRE scores. To be competitive, applicants should be aware of the following guidelines: a 3.0 GPA or higher for the Master’s degree and a 3.5 GPA or higher for the Ph.D. degree is normally required.
The application fee is currently $70.00. Now Available - Payments by credit card.
For those applicants who are reapplying (application has been on file for less than 18 months) the application fee is $25.00 (checks only). Please send a check made out to Fordham University to the address below.

New Students
* Complete the New Student Non-Degree/Matriculated Application
* Contact the department chair/graduate director for signature (see the Program & Degrees webpage)
* The department sends their recommendation to the Office of Academic Programs & Support for the approval

Continuing Students
* Complete the Continuing Student Non-Degree/Matriculated Application
* Contact the department chair/graduate director for signature (see the Program & Degrees webpage)
* The department sends their recommendation to the Office of Academic Programs & Support for the approval

The following principles guide decisions on admission:
* Before making departmental/program admission recommendations to the Dean, at least two members of the unit’s faculty carefully read each application file.
* Admission decisions are based on careful consideration of the transcript(s), the statement of intent, the writing sample, the recommendation letters and GRE scores. No single element of the application file is read in isolation.
* The department/program also takes into account the appropriateness of the applicant’s academic project to the characteristics of the curriculum and the scholarly profile of the faculty.
Students are encouraged to visit Fordham to speak with faculty of the department/program to which they are applying.
