Language, Literacy, and Learning

Note:
Admissions for the PHD program in Language, Literacy, and Learning have been suspended for 2011; check back here for an update for subsequent years.

The intention of the doctoral program in language, literacy and learning is to contribute to the improvement of education, especially urban education. The program accomplishes this through research and advanced graduate study in language development and use; in the development, use and effects of literacy; and in second language learning and bilingualism, as these elements relate to learning, teaching, cognitive development and curriculum.

This program prepares educational leaders and researchers to address problems of curriculum, instruction, learning, teacher education and human development in which language is a critical variable. Also, although graduates should be experienced in, and capable of, applying theory and research to practical educational problems, the program focuses on the development of practical theorists and researchers rather than educational practitioners.
