Counseling Psychology Program & Admissions Information
The Division of Psychological and Educational Services offers three programs in counseling: a Master of Science in education degree (M.S.Ed.) in school counseling, which leads to eligibility for provisional New York State certification as a school counselor; a Master of Science in education degree (M.S.Ed.) in mental health counseling, which leads to eligibility for a New York state license as a mental health counselor, and a Ph.D. program in counseling psychology that leads to licensure as a psychologist.

The Master of Science in Education (MSEd) in School Counseling (SC) degree is Education Counseling designed to rigorously prepare graduates for work in a variety of school settings, including public, parochial and private elementary, middle, and high schools. The program emphasizes knowledge basic to all school counseling settings, including competence in individual, group, and career counseling, program development and evaluation and assessment.

The M.S.Ed. program in mental health counseling is designed to prepare mental health counselors who will work in mental health clinics, community mental health center, hospitals, nonprofit counseling agencies, college and university campuses, corporate mental health services (e.g., employee assistance programs, personnel departments, mental health support units) and are eligible to open independent private practices after licensure. This rigorous, applied training program includes 60 course credits (in semester hours) plus a minimum 600-hour mental health counseling internship.

The PhD degree program in counseling psychology is fully accredited by the American Psychological Association. It is based on the scientist-practitioner model. Upon completion of all requirements for the PhD degree, students are qualified for practice either independently or in colleges, agencies and other settings and are well-grounded in research methods.The program is structured sothat it is open both to those who have alreadycompleted an appropriate master’s degree or professional diploma program in counseling and to those who have had no previous graduate work in the field.
Program graduates will have satisfied the academic and internship requirements for licensing as a psychologist in New York State.

School Psychology Program & Admissions Information
Programs in school psychology develop individuals for positions in P–12 schools, for psychological services to children in healthservice settings, for academic and research careers, and for independent psychological practice. Doctoral Program in school psychology is accredited by the American Psychological Association, approved by the National Association of School Psychologists through the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and registered with theNewYork State Department of Education for purposes of school psychology certificationand professional licensing in psychology.
The programs emphasize training to maximize the educational and social-emotional development of children in urban settings, especially children from culturally and linguistically diversebackgrounds. The bilingual program is designed to go beyond simply training bilingual/bicultural individuals to offer school psychological services. The bilingual program offers an integrated training program to prepare psychologists with specialized competencies for working with children who are second language learners.
