The principles of equity, access, and rigor frame the course work and field experiences designed to develop competencies in both general and special education in Physics.

The program is distinguished by exceptionally strong field experiences, carefully coordinated sequence of courses progressing from foundations and teaching methods, and a capstone requirement which includes the development of a teacher portfolio. Candidates’ development is supported by expert faculty, master teachers and field advisers/mentors.

Program Pre-Requisites

Applicants must have an earned degree in physics or related area (for example, physical science) with a minimum of 30 credits in physics coursework and 16 credits distributed among biology, earth science and chemistry. Included in the 36 credits must be coursework in the following areas: principles of physics including concepts in mechanics, electricity, magnetism, thermodynamics, waves, optics, atomic and nuclear physics; radioactivity, relativity and quantum mechanics.

Fieldwork Requirements

In the fall and spring semesters of the first year, students are in classrooms for three full days per week: observation for three weeks, then student teaching, in the same classroom, for ten weeks.

In the fall and spring semesters of the second year, students are in classrooms for five full days per week: observation for two weeks, then student teaching, in the same classroom, for twelve weeks.

Certification Information

Teacher candidates who meet all program requirements, complete the course of study and meet established field experience competencies are eligible for Fordham University’s endorsement for New York state initial certification in their program area. Read more about certification procedures.

Pass rates for Fordham’s initial teacher education graduates on the NYSTCE Teacher exams have been over 95% each year.
