The field of Special Education has a great demand for teachers who demonstrate understanding, patience, knowledge and skills expertly combined to provide optimal learning environments and experiences for exceptional learners.
The advanced certificate program in Childhood Special Education (grades 1-6) prepares candidates to become such teachers through a rigorous academic program that builds on a foundation of childhood special education and psychology, evidence-based practices, and a strong sequence of field experiences and student teaching. Candidates admitted to the program will obtain the knowledge and skills required to succeed in inclusive and special education classrooms, with support of expert faculty, experienced teachers and field advisers/mentors.
Applicants must have a masters degree and an initial or professional certification in elementary or childhood education, or the equivalent.

Student teaching/practicum is mandatory; requirements are determined during academic advisement. Fieldwork may be embedded into work schedule. Courses are scheduled in the evening. Current students/teachers are encouraged to apply.

Teacher candidates who meet all program requirements, complete state-mandated workshops, and earn the passing score on New York State exams will be recommended for New York State certification. Read more about certification requirements and procedures at NYSED.gov.
