Career Path: For candidates who are not certified teachers. This program leads to initial certification in Childhood Education (1-6) and Teaching Students with Disabilities in Childhood (1-6).

Career Path: for candidates who already have certification in Childhood or Elementary education. It leads to initial certification in Teaching Students with Disabilities in Childhood.

To enable children with disabilities to reach their personal and academic potential requires caring teachers who have expertise in children’s learning and development, elementary curriculum content and pedagogy, and the specialized knowledge and skills to adapt learning environments and experiences to meet individual children’s needs.

The dual certification program prepares such teachers through a rigorous academic program that builds on a foundation of childhood education and psychology and provides a strong sequence a foundation of childhood education and psychology, and provides a strong sequence of field experiences and student teaching

Fieldwork Requirements

In the fall and spring semesters of the first year, students are in classrooms for three full days per week: observation for three weeks, then student teaching, in the same classroom, for ten weeks.

In the fall and spring semesters of the second year, students are in classrooms for five full days per week: observation for two weeks, then student teaching, in the same classroom, for twelve weeks.

Certification Information

Teacher candidates who meet all program requirements, complete the course of study and meet established field experience competencies are eligible for Fordham University’s endorsement for New York state initial certification in their program area. Read more about certification procedures.

Pass rates for Fordham’s initial teacher education graduates on the NYSTCE Teacher exams have been over 95% each year.
