Contemporary ideas and current mandates are redefining both teaching and learning teacher’s responsibilities are changing. Teaching all children requires the theory, practice and expertise reflected in the courses for this degree. The educational experiences of young children with special needs can have a dramatic impact on learning and development.
The program prepares teachers with expertise in learning and development of young children (birth through grade 2) with special needs and providing appropriate learning experiences and support of children with disabilities.
This degree provides rigorous academic course work to develop the knowledge and skills needed for success as teachers of young children with disabilities. Coursework is supported with hands-on, practical field observations and student teaching experiences.
Applicants must have LAS prerequisites in 7 areas of study, including English literature, math, foreign language, and writing.

Generally, student teaching requires one full academic year, with placements in two different grade levels. In the fall semester, students complete 3 full days per week, and in the spring semester, 5 full days per week. Students are mentored by a field specialist and placed in our high needs “partnership schools” in New York City.

Teacher candidates who meet all program requirements, complete state-mandated workshops and exams, complete the course of study and established field experience are eligible for Fordham University’s endorsement for New York State certification in their program area. Read more about certification requirements and procedures at NYSED.gov.
Pass rates for Fordham’s initial teacher education graduates on the NYSTCE Teacher exams have been over 95% each year.
