GSE Application Requirements and Procedures

Requirements

Critera for admission vary according to degree program and specialty. Please consult the program page on our website for special requirements, including prerequisites. In addition to the program-specific criteria, all applicants seeking admission to graduate degree programs in the Graduate School of Education must meet the following requirements:

Liberal Arts & Science Background
All applicants must have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and have obtained a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 (B). If an applicant has received a post bachelors degree from an accredited college or university, a minimal GPA of 3.5 is required. Official transcripts of all coursework taken at the undergraduate and/or graduate level, including study abroad transcripts, must be submitted to the GSE Office of Admissions in official sealed envelopes. If a degree has been completed, the transcript must include the degree awarded and date conferred.

Resume/Curriculum Vitae
Applicants are required to submit a resume or curriculum Vitae (C.V.) with the online application.

Personal Statement
Applicants are required to submit a personal statement in the appropriate section of the online application. There are two questions asked which all applicants to GSE must answer. The third question is required for doctoral applicants only.

Letters of Recommendation
Applicants are required to submit two letters of recommendation. Recommendations may be submitted online through the online application. Paper recommendations must be submitted to the GSE Office of Admissions in official sealed envelopes. We encourage you to have your recommenders complete the online recommendation.

GRE/MAT Exams
Applicants to doctoral programs (with the exception of the Ed.D. in Administration and Supervision - Urban Leadership  program) are required to submit test scores (not older than 5 years) as follows:

The required exam should be taken at least one month prior to the application deadline to ensure timely receipt of scores by GSE Admissions. Our GRE school code is 2259.

Requirements for International Students

Test Requirements - In addition to the general requirements for all applicants to the Graduate School of Education, international students whose native language is not English are also required to demonstrate proficiency in oral and written English. Read more about English language requirements.

Evaluation of Foreign Credentials - Applicants must provide us with a translation of their transcript if it is in a foreign language, an evaluation of their transcripts with conversion to a U.S. grading scale, and conversion of their final GPA to a U.S. scale. The Graduate School of Education only accepts evaluations from World Education Services (WES). This company provides fee-based services to international applicants. Application Procedures

The following outline/timeline is a general outline for applicants to the Graduate School of Education. Individual program timelines may vary, and are noted below:

Application Review
Applications for admission are considered complete and ready for review only when an applicant has submitted their online application, paid their $50 application fee, and all supplemental materials have been received by the GSE Office of Admissions. At the time an application is deemed complete it will be sent to the program faculty review committee. The programs outline below will only be sent for review on the deadline date for applications and not before, regardless of the time at which then application is complete.

Tracking of Supplemental Materials

Applicants may track the receipt of the supplemental materials from their VIP Page on the application checklist. In order to view this information an applicant must submit their application. The GSE Office of Admissions is unable to attach received materials to un-submitted applications.

Important E-mails

Emails will be sent to applicants on the following basis during the application process:
  • Confirmation of submitted application
  • Confirmation of completed application sent for review
    * We will include a timeline for expected final admission decision.
  • Final admission decision
    * a hard copy will also be mailed
