Graduate Assistantships

A limited number of graduate assistantships are awarded each year to qualified individuals who have been admitted to one of the degree programs in the Graduate School of Education. These awards are made in recognition of past academic achievement, special competencies and/or academic potential. Assistantships provide opportunities for academic and professional development, as well as financial benefits. Full-time students (12 or more credits) in any degree program within the Graduate School of Education (except Intern Fellows) may apply. Assistantship awards provide tuition remission for courses. The awards carry with them the obligation to contribute to the Graduate School of Education through work in one of the School’s offices, or on a special project or assignment. There are two types of assistantships. A research graduate assistantship is an award to support faculty or division research, service or professional efforts. It may involve flexible hours and off-site or service activities. An administrative graduate assistantship supports a division or program administratively. Students must be available during regular business hours.

Prospective Students: Must fill out the scholarship section of the online application indicating their interest in GSE School Based aid (located on the Supplemental form’s page of the online application). There is no deadline for applications for prospective students, however, please note that awards are issued on the availability of funds.

Continuing Students: Awards must be renewed each year. Applications are due to Anisa Sanchez in the GSE Office of Admissions by February 1st by mail or by fax at (212) 636-7106.

GSE School Based Scholarships

School-based financial support is offered by the Graduate School of Education through the scholarship and grant programs described below. Students may apply for more than one program, but they can receive support from only one program at a time. Eligibility for all of the scholarship programs listed below includes demonstrated financial need and meet the minimum GPA requirement of a 3.5 undergraduate GPA or 3.8 graduate GPA. All applicants for scholarships must complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). FAFSA applications can be completed at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/. Fordham University’s Federal School Code is #002722.

All scholarship recipients must enroll and maintain enrollment in two courses for the fall and spring semesters and one course during the summer sessions, unless otherwise noted. Awards are made for the full academic year (fall, spring, summer), unless otherwise noted. Students not continuously enrolled each semester of the academic year lose their award for subsequent semesters and are not guaranteed reinstatement.
Opportunity and Excellence Scholarships
A limited number of need-based competitive scholarships are awarded to qualified persons with financial need and academic merit who are admitted to a degree program (excluding Teach for America and Department of Education) to prepare for careers in schools or professional practice. Students must be enrolled for at least 6 credits per semester to qualify for this award.

Horizons Teacher Scholarships
A limited number of need-based scholarships are awarded to qualified students who are leaving established careers to prepare for careers in education full-time. The awards may be renewed each year, if comparative financial need continues and if the student is enrolled for 12 or more credits each semester.

Scholarships for Partners in Innovation and Excellence
Scholarships are awarded to selected teams and cohorts from schools or school districts with which Fordham Graduate School of Education has a formal partnership agreement for educational renewal, curriculum improvement, restructuring or other school innovation or excellence objectives. Application procedures and deadlines, as well as the amount or ercentage of the scholarship, vary in each partnership. Contact your school principal or the deans’ office to find out whether your school has a partnership with the Graduate School of Education and whether you may participate in partnership-related courses with scholarship support.

Catholic School and Non-Public School Scholarship
A limited amount of aid is available for persons employed as full-time professionals in Catholic, faith-based and nonpublic schools. The scholarships are equivalent to 40% of tuition charges and up to six credits per semester. Students must check the application qualifications. This aid is processed by the Centers for Catholic Leadership and Faith Based Education, not the GSE Office of Admissions. Please visit their website for more information and to download the scholarship application.
