On July 1, 2006, Fordham University entered a 5-year contract with the New York State Education Department Office of Bilingual and Foreign Language Studies to open a Bilingual ESL Technical Assistance Center (BETAC). Through this endeavor, all Bronx schools having English Language Learners receive professional development and technical assistance services in support of providing best practices and standards based education.

Mission Statement

The NYS Bronx BETAC at Fordham University was created to support the delivery of instruction through professional development services, resources, and the dissemination of information to all schools servicing English Language Learners in the Bronx .  The ultimate goal is to assist schools in bridging the achievement gap and creating high expectations through standard based learning.  
The objectives are to:
  • Create a community of learners centered around the needs of ELL’s
  • Look at research based practices to drive the instruction
  • Recognizing exemplary classrooms and practices for ELL’s
  • Identify curriculum materials and assessments for second language learners
  • Properly identify and support instruction through state and federal allocations
