This hands-on, full-day institute demonstrated how to:
  • Assist learners in accessing complex texts using a thematic content-based approach
  • Select texts for ELLs at different reading levels and form text sets using “stair step” books on the same theme
  • Building oral language and background knowledge to prepare students for reading
  • Promote specific reading and writing skill development around informational and literary texts for grade-level appropriate topics
  • Promote active engagement of learners, despite low levels of literacy
  • Set appropriate task expectations across English proficiency levels and monitor
  • Encourage reading and writing outside of school to enhance literacy development
