GSE Partner Schools’ Students Show Off Musical, Oratory Skills

NYC Elementary School Principals Association Takes Note

At P.S. 175 on West 134th Street in Harlem, where a Fordham banner hangs high near the entrance, Principal Cheryl McClendon works hard to “move her building.” She devises strategies to boost student achievement, develops arts programs in music and dance, and keeps up on the latest metrics used by downtown education officials to judge her school.

The school scored a “B” on the New York City Department of Education’s 2010 progress report, based in large part on improvements her students made that year. She said Fordham’s Partnership Support Organization (PSO), which assists P.S. 175 with budgeting, fundraising and academic support, has played a critical role in her school’s improvement. “Fordham keeps us on the cutting edge,” McClendon said. P.S. 175 is among 35 city public schools served by Fordham’s PSO, run by the University’s Graduate School of Education (GSE). It is New York’s only graduate school to take on such a responsibility, with GSE now overseeing schools serving 17,000 students in the Bronx, Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn.
