Program Information

Fordham University’s Graduate School of Education is pleased to announce the successful state registration of its new Master of Science in Education (MS.Ed.) in Mental Health Counseling Program. This rigorous, applied training program includes 60 course credits (in semester hours) plus a minimum 600-hour Mental Health Counseling Field Experience. The program has a practitioner-scientist orientation and includes a strong multicultural counseling emphasis. The MS.Ed. can be completed full-time in two years (with summers) or part-time in three years (with summers). Graduates of the program are eligible to sit for the New York State Mental Health Counseling Licensure exam after the completion of 3,000 hours of supervised post-degree mental health counseling practice. Program graduates will be eligible for employment in mental health clinics, community mental health centers, hospitals, non-profit counseling agencies, college and university campuses, corporate mental health services (e.g., employee assistance programs, personnel departments, mental health support units) and are eligible to open independent private practices after licensure (for more information on New York State’s Mental Health License requirements see http://www.op.nysed.gov/mhpcontact.htm#lic).
Admission into the MS.ED. Program in Mental Health Counseling is highly competitive. Successful applicants often have high undergraduate grade point averages (3.3 or above on a 4.0 scale), work or volunteer experience in counseling or related fields, strong concurrent interests in both counseling practice and research, excellent letters of recommendation, and a strong commitment to serving urban and multicultural populations.
