The Graduate School of Social Service
HISTORY AND MISSION
The Graduate School of Social Service was founded in 1916 in a small brownstone building in Manhattan. We have grown to become one of the largest social work programs in the world, offering B.A.S.W., M.S.W., and Ph.D. in social work degrees on three New York campuses and an online M.S.W. We are accredited by the Council on Social Work Education.
The mission of GSS is to educate students to promote human rights and social justice. We strive to improve the well-being of people and communities through our work.
We value our reputation for academic excellence and are proud of ranking number 11 on the list of the best M.S.W. programs in the country, per the 2013 U.S. News & World Report Best Graduate Schools. In addition, our Online M.S.W. program is number 1 on TheBestSchools.org's list of the 10 Best Online Masters in Social Work Degree Programs.
Our nationally recognized program is enhanced by our distinguished faculty, their influential research, and the important work of our centers and institutes.
Individual attention is the hallmark of the social work profession, and we use the same approach with our students. Every student has a faculty adviser to guide him or her through the program. And although more than 1,500 students are enrolled at GSS, we keep our average class size at 25 so that we never lose that individual focus.
We also offer a variety of full-time and part-time plans of study to fit the diverse needs of our students. For example, M.S.W. classes can be taken on weekdays, weekends, or evenings. Our flexible options make it easier for our students to achieve their goals.
DIVERSITY AND COMMUNITY
The word which describes GSS students best is diverse. Our students are different ages, races, and ethnicities. They have different backgrounds, goals and schedules. Some work full-time, and others are full-time students. Yet all are smart, caring, and compassionate. Together, we form a close community at GSS, connecting around our values of human rights and social justice.
CHOICE OF CAMPUS
Whether you relate to the fast-paced hum of an urban campus or the tree-lined avenues of the suburbs, GSS has a place for you: our cosmopolitan Lincoln Center campus, scenic Fordham Westchester campus, or collaborative M.S.W. program at Molloy College in Rockville Centre, Long Island. And our Online M.S.W. program enables students to get a world-class Fordham University education from almost anywhere.
Graduates of GSS are helping others today as successful generalists, clinicians, researchers, professors, and administrators. Whether they are leaders in our profession or effecting change in hospitals, schools, or shelters, our alumni are improving the lives of the vulnerable people they serve every day across our cities, states and around the world.
