Learned Lunches
The Institute sponsors Learned Lunches (lunchtime lectures) for graduate social work students. Topics have included: Role Strain in Female Students in Graduate Social Work Education-Culturally Competent Organizational Responses; Understanding the Experiences of Grandmothers Raising Grandchildren; An Ecological Perspective-Mississippi Rural Development and the Employment of Women; Definitions, Causes, and Prevention of Burnout Among Helping Professionals; Innovative Programs for Servicing Young Girls in NYC; Using Postmodernism to Break Stereotypes of Hispanic Women; Welfare and Employment in the Context of Welfare Reform; Partner Violence among Military Women; Reconciling work and family—an International Perspective; Domestic Violence and Older Women; and Self-esteem in Hispanic Girls.

Dr. Cox's study examined the issues and the stresses encountered by grandparents raising grandchildren. The presentation described Dr. Cox’s empowerment program for grandparents which has been offered at Fordham University for the past seven years.

“Role Strain in Female Students in Graduate Social Work Education: Culturally Competent Organizational Responses”

Summary:
Dr. Susan Egan presented the research she did for her dissertation. Female graduate social work students were surveyed to understand their role strain and use of supports from their informal network, place of employment, and the university. This study found that those students who had higher role strain were more likely to use supports from their place of employment and the university. These students were the Hispanic and African-Americans. The need for culturally competent institutional responses to this differencewas discussed.
