Beck Institute Visits
the United Nations
------------------------------------------

Preparing for an inter-faith dialogue on "Keeping the Faith Alive", in June, Drs. Lightburn, Lindquist and Brownell (of the Women and Girls Institute of GSSS) went to the Church Center for the United Nations to meet with Susanne Paul, Director of Global Action on Aging for the Women's Division of the United Methodist Church. The discussion focused on the needs of elderly, poor women and the role of the religious community in meeting their needs in preparation for the Beck symposium "Keeping the Faith Alive: The Faith Community's Response to Elderly Women in Poverty - An Inter-Religious Dialogue". The symposium is scheduled for Thursday, November 15, 2007 at Fordham University, Lincoln Center campus. (Details to follow).

 Cause to Celebrate:
 An Inspirational April Conference

On Sunday, April 16, 2007 a severe nor'easter threatened to compromise the recent Beck Institute conference, "Celebrating Faith in Action". In spite of the torrential rains over 200 attended. Our speakers, Rev. Dr. Fr. Bryan Hehir, Dr. John Kretzmann, and Rev. Dr. James Forbes truly amazed us in overcoming considerable travel challenges to make it from Chicago, Boston, and Virginia.

Their inspiring presentations brought us valuable perspective and important challenge that framed our thinking for the day. We are grateful for their extra effort in joining us! We also appreciate the talent and energy of the Addicts Rehabilitation Center Gospel Choir (Nimrod Lumpkin, director) who lifted our hearts and expectations in spite of the storm.

The fifteen afternoon workshops were well attended, and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. A real celebration inspired participants and created momentum for the ongoing work in the community and for new collaborations with the Institute. Over 100 people attended the closing reception. Visible energy was present at both the luncheon and the reception, with opportunities for new relationships and connections. We were impressed by the high level of networking demonstrated by two groups of emergency food providers, meeting for the first time, who have proposed getting together on a regular basis following the conference. We look forward to building more of these types of connections. All in all, there was a wonderful spirit that emanated from the conference that carries us forward into the work of the summer and the next academic year.

It is with great pleasure that we announce the appointment of Dr. Dale Lindquist as Associate Director of the Beck Institute for Religion and Poverty beginning the 2007-2008 Academic Year. Dr. Lindquist has made a major contribution to the Institute over the past year as Acting Managing Director while he has been a visiting clinical professor at the Graduate School of Social Service. During this time he has become acquainted with a wide range of faith-based agencies and religious congregations that provide poverty related services (homeless shelters, housing, soup kitchens, youth services, HIV/AIDS, outreach to the incarcerated and their families, etc.). As our Beck ambassador in the community, Dr. Lindquist has made important connections that have renewed our network of collaborators that now represents some 45 different service providers who are meeting the needs of the poor across the city.

Dr. Lindquist brings a unique background to further the mission of the Institute. His educational background reflects diverse interests, talents, and commitments. He has an MSW from Fordham University Graduate School of Social Service, A Doctor of Ministry from New York Theological Seminary and an MFA from the Yale School of Art in filmmaking. A practicing psychotherapist in New York City and Westchester for the past 25 years, Dr Lindquist has most recently been a Visiting Assistant Clinical Professor at GSSS, teaching clinical practice. His enduring interest in the integration of clinical work and the spiritual journey will continue to advance the Beck Institute' s work as we collaborate with congregations providing social services. We look forward to new documentaries that Dr. Lindquist, an award winning filmmaker, will be producing to celebrate the work of the faith community with the poor in New York City.
