CLUB AMIGAS

Club Amigas is a mentoring project being conducted by Dr. Ellen Silber of the Marymount Institute for the Education of Women & Girls at the Marymount College of Fordham University.  College students at Marymount College are mentoring approximately 40 middle school girls from White Plains and Tarrytown school districts in New York on a weekly basis.   Faculty from the Institute are evaluating this program and mentoring the mentors.

WESTCHESTER COMMUNITY FOUNDATION

The Institute for Women and Girls has received funding from the Westchester Community Foundation to study and report on the needs of women and girls in Westchester County, New York.  Studies of women and girls in different regions of the country often reveal undetected  vulnerabilities and unmet needs, as well as previously untapped strengths upon which communities may build to better serve women and girls.  In comparison to men, women disproportionately continue to live in poverty, experience significant gaps in earnings and education, lack of affordable housing and encounter racial disparities in health care access and morbidity.  The purpose of this project is to provide an accurate appraisal of the current status and unmet needs of women and girls in this highly diverse geographic region, and in turn, to inform future grant making and planning in Westchester County.
