Become A Field Instructor

Field instruction is one of the most important aspects of an M.S.W. student's education.  It allows students to apply the practice skills and knowledge learned in the classroom to real-world situations.

But in order to succeed, fieldwork students need field instructors!  Field instructors supervise and mentor M.S.W. students in a fieldwork assignment.  They play a vital role in the lives of our students and the future of social work.

Give back to the profession you love.  We need field instructors all over the tri-state area.  Join us as a valuable partner in helping the next generation of social workers succeed.

QUALIFICATIONS

Social workers interested in becoming field instructors must have:
  • a social work license as required by the state where the social worker practices
  • an M.S.W. degree
  • at least three years of post-master's experience
  • completed the Seminar in Field Instruction (SIFI) or take the seminar while supervising their first student.  (The course is free.)

SEMINAR IN FIELD INSTRUCTION (SIFI)

The Seminar in Field Instruction (SIFI) is a free course offered by the Graduate School of Social Service.  It provides first-time field instructors with the knowledge and skills to effectively supervise social work students.

The seminar meets for 12 sessions during the academic year, bimonthly in the fall and monthly in the spring.  Sessions last two hours and are held at our Lincoln Center, Westchester, and Molloy campuses.

Once you have successfully completed the SIFI, you are qualified to supervise students as a field instructor for any school of social work in the tri-state area.

If you have already taken the SIFI course at another social work program in the New York City area, you do not need to take it again with us.

Learn more about SIFI and get the class schedule on our Seminar in Field Instruction (SIFI) page.
