HOW ARE ONLINE COURSES DIFFERENT FROM TRADITIONAL (FACE-TO-FACE) COURSES?
Online courses are different from on-campus courses in that all course material is available via the Internet. Students can access the courses from their home or office and in most cases there are no specific time requirements, meaning you can access your course from anywhere, at any time.
IS THE ONLINE PROGRAM AS RIGOROUS AS THE FACE-TO FACE VERSION?
Online courses at Fordham are just as rigorous as on-campus courses and in some cases may be more challenging. Online students need to be organized, technically capable, self-disciplined and prepared to complete course work without direct supervision.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO COMPLETE A COURSE?
Online MSW courses are eight weeks in length. Students will take two consecutive courses during each Fall and Spring semester, and in most cases one course in the summer: Fall A, Fall B, Spring A, Spring B and Summer.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO COMPLETE A PROGRAM?
Based on part-time enrollment through the online MSW program, it will take approximately 3½ years to complete the program.
HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE ME TO COMPLETE MY ADVANCED STANDING MSW DEGREE ONLINE?
The advanced standing program will take approximately one and one half years to complete, leading to the M.S.W. degree with a clinical concentration. For more details on program schedule, please view the Advanced Standing Plan of Study.
WILL I HAVE AN INSTRUCTOR?
You will have an instructor for each course. The same faculty who teach our on-campus students will be leading our online programs. You will have access to the same community of faculty as your on-campus counterparts.
WILL I INTERACT WITH OTHER STUDENTS?
Students interact online by posting comments and observations in the class discussion board. Students will react to each other’s posts and conduct fruitful conversations about various topics. Instructors typically will lead online discussions that allow students to benefit from the expertise of their peers.
DO I NEED TO BE AN EXPERT WITH TECHNOLOGY?
While you do not need to be a technology expert to take an online class, you should have some proficiency with a computer, e-mail, saving documents and navigating the Internet. Additionally, your computer will need to meet our minimum technology standards in order to access online course content. Make sure to check our Technical Requirements.
DO I HAVE TO BE ONLINE AT SPECIFIC TIMES?
Online programs at Fordham are designed to be primarily asynchronous. So, in general, there are no specific times that students are required to be online. Course materials and assignments can be completed anytime, anywhere as long as assignment due dates are met. In some instances an instructor might require a synchronous class session if specific course content requires it, or if the instructor may offer supporting resources which are available at a specific time, such as office hours. The intent is to create a flexible and accessible learning environment for students.
AM I REQUIRED TO COME TO CAMPUS AT ANY POINT IN MY STUDIES?
Students are not required to visit the NYC campus but as Fordham students, are welcome to any campus.
WILL I BE DOING FIELD PLACEMENT AS AN ONLINE STUDENT?
Yes. Field instruction is an integral part of the academic preparation for the MSW degree, and provides the student with the opportunity to develop competence and engage actively in professional tasks thatcomplement and reinforce classroom learning. Students will be placed, through the Field Instruction Department, in an agency within their geographic area. Students in the Fall cohort will begin Field Placement in their second year. Spring cohort and Advanced Standing students begin their Field Placement in their first Fall semester. Please see the Field Placement page for more detailed information.
HOW OFTEN WILL I NEED TO BE IN MY ONLINE CLASS?
