Steps for Applying for the New York State LMSW

 

1.      Complete Form 1  - Application for Licensure and First Registration - in the

Social Work Licensing Application Packet.

This form can be obtained on-line at www.op.nysed.gov or through a link at www.naswnyc.org.

2. Once you have graduated*, complete Form 2 and send it to

When received, the Registrar will verify your graduation date and send it directly to Albany.  An official transcript is not needed.
 
3.   Once the Office of the Professions has your application, fee, and verification of graduation, they will send you a letter of approval to take the exam.
 
4.   Follow the instructions in the Association of Social Work Boards Candidate Handbook to schedule your examination.  The Masters Exam (formerly Intermediate Exam) is the one you take.  You can also register on-line – www.aswb.org.
 
 
*If you will be an August 31st graduate and want to take the exam when you have completed your requirements, that is, your last course in summer session at the end of June or your internship at the end of July, call Dean Egan at that time  - (212) 636-6605.  A letter of program completion will be sent to Albany and they can approve you to take the exam.  After 8/31, you need to send in Form 2 to verify your graduation date. 
 
*If you will be a February 1st graduate and want to take the exam when you have completed your coursework in December, call Dean Egan at that time  - (212) 636-6605.  A letter of program completion will be sent to Albany and they can approve you to take the exam.  After 2/1, you need to send in Form 2 to verify your graduation date.
