Student support
The Gabelli School of Business sets the bar high, but it also provides the guidance and support students need to meet those standards. Informed by the Jesuit tradition of cura personalis, which means "care for the whole person," Gabelli deans, professors, program directors and advisors work with students individually and in groups to make sure that they can reach their goals.
Intensive student support at Gabelli takes several forms. Learn more about each by clicking on the headings below.
Academic advising
Each student is different. Some know their career path from the moment they arrive at Fordham. Others have no idea where to start. Still others think they know when they’re freshmen, but arrive at a completely different decision after a few semesters.
Gabelli’s academic advisers know how to handle all of these situations and more. This entire specialized staff — freshman, sophomore, junior and senior deans; a director of personal and professional development; the director of international programs; a transfer advisor, and others — helps each student to plan an academic program and learn how to make wise decisions regarding academics, careers and life in general.
Advisors provide help in identifying goals, choosing courses, investigating majors and concentrations, experimenting with electives, securing internships, and building the portfolio of skills needed to succeed in any given area of business. Personal and professional development
There is a crucial reason why this division of Gabelli is called "personal and professional development" and not merely "job placement." Our program guides students through a comprehensive four-year sequence that helps them discover what they want and build the academic credentials, business competencies and interpersonal skills they need to attain it.
Please visit the careers section of this site for a detailed look at our approach to personal and professional development.
Meeting financial needs through scholarships
We recognize that many families face a challenge in financing an undergraduate education. To ease the burden on both students and their parents, Gabelli provides resources to help students apply for scholarships and grants. An added benefit is that selection for a scholarship is an honor that a student can list on his or her résumé.
Some available scholarships are internal to Fordham, while others are external. The director of honors opportunities, pre-professional advisors in areas such as accounting and finance, and other members of the dean's office team are on hand to help students in their search.
Study and tutoring center
Sometimes, a student's best resource is another student — especially someone who took the same course in a prior semester and excelled. Students who want peer tutoring can come to Gabelli's study center and receive help, at no charge, in subjects from accounting to economics to statistics.
The study center is open throughout the fall and spring semesters. Hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. from Monday through Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday. Students can sign up online for appointments through GabelliConnect, and a detailed schedule of tutors and their topics of specialization is available at the study center.
