Sidney Henne (GSB '11)
Sidney Henne (GSB '11) has been fascinated by commercials for as long as she can remember and was barely out of elementary school when she decided she wanted a career in advertising. It's no surprise, then, that she focused her Gabelli School of Business coursework on marketing and economics. Economics helped her understand how countries and individuals consume, and marketing enlightened her about individuals' purchase behavior. She continued with those subjects when she studied abroad in Barcelona, Spain, choosing a full-immersion program in which all of her classes were conducted in Spanish. "This gave me an opportunity to learn another culture and language well, and also to have a better understanding of conducting business internationally," she said. In the process, Sidney earned Gabelli's G.L.O.B.E. second concentration. She also completed the school's four-year Global Business Honors Program.
Within a month after her graduation from Gabelli, Sidney began full-time at BBDO New York, where she works in account management — having landed precisely the kind of career she had in mind since she was very young.
Sidney gained internship experience while at Gabelli, too. She first worked as a digital marketing intern for a small travel radio station, helping to make decisions about the station's web site redesign and its digital advertising plan. She then became an advertising intern at MetLife, where she gained a grasp of how marketing decisions are based on analytics, metrics and strategy. Sidney got the chance to develop and present a social media strategy of her own, and she worked directly with advertising agencies.
