  SERVICE LEARNING

Recognizing the educational value of experiential learning and its impact upon the development of the whole person, the service learning program represents a concrete expression of the College's mission to foster "men and women for others."  Facilitated by the Community Service Program, Service-learning at Fordham takes two forms—the Interdisciplinary Seminar and Integrated Service-Learning.

Service-Learning Interdisciplinary Seminar
In this student-initiated program, students make connections between a course they are enrolled in and service to the community.  Students enroll in the program by complete a service-learning agreement form due on the second Friday of the semester.  The agreement is approved by the course instructor, a representative of the community-based organization (service site) and the Service-Learning program staff.  The requirements for the Service-Learning Interdisciplinary Seminar include: 30 hours of community service, 2 integrative essays, 5 interdisciplinary seminars, and weekly e-mail reflections.  Students come together in a series of interdisciplinary seminar meetings through the semester to synthesize their course and community experiences.  Upon completion of all the requirements for the seminar, students will receive one additional credit for the learning that takes place through the integration of service and scholarship.

Integrated Service-Learning
In this faculty-initiated form of service-learning, service is intergrated into a course as a resource.  Together, faculty and students explore the structural and social justice dimensions of their work in the community as well as its connection to their course.  All members of the course are engaged in service to the community which can then become an integral part of the classroom experience.  Students can identify these courses by the section designation “SL” (for example: RSRU-1000-SL1).  Students can enroll during registration periods the semester before.
