Funding Opportunities from the Chief Research Officer
Faculty Research Grants, Fellowships and Expense Program & Clare Boothe Luce Funding

Faculty Research Grants (FRG) are provided to tenured and tenure-track faculty in accord with  University Statute .  

FRG applications are considered and awarded in two cycles, one for "1st Year at Fordham" faculty only, and the second which is open to all tenured/tenure-track faculty. 

The deadlines for application are (click for forms and instructions):

"1st Year at Fordham" faculty October 1st
All tenured/tenure-track faculty  January 15th 

In brief, applicants may apply for:

$6,500 toward expenses
that will be incurred preparing an application for external support (see on-line application and Budget Proposal Form regarding limits and rules for making additional "extraordinary equipment requests")

$4,000 toward expenses that will be incurred preparing a scholarly publication only (still use Budget Proposal Form).

$6,500 summer stipend to relieve from summer teaching responsibilities faculty who have a scholarly project that does not at present have any of the budget needs listed above, but that would be significantly advanced by 3 months of undistracted attention, and which has a strong potential of achieving either: (a) subsequent external support from its results (e.g., identified contract, fellowship or grant opportunity); or (b) imminent publication through an identified venue (no budget required).

FINALLY PLEASE NOTE THAT all Awardees are required to submit:

1. all requests for disbursement of funds must as...
    A) a hard copy memo stating:
        (i) your name
        (ii) FRG 20XX - 20XX (XX = appropriate years of funding)
        (iii) a brief explantation of your expense making clear that it complies with your budget
   (B) accompanied by the appropriate Fordham Accounts Payable or HR paperwork,
         completed with everything except the budget numbers and authorizing signature
         (your dept secretary may be able to assist you, or you can use the handbooks from
          both of those offices, available by clicking "Guidance" for the Office of Sponsored Programs

   (C) with any required documentation attached as hard copy originals (e.g., receipts, invoices)
   (D) to the following address:

2. an FRG Final Summary Report using the link below by: 
    
    May 1 of the year after awarded funding became available (standard)
    July 1 of the year after awarded funding became available for awardees who received an extension
    Labor Day at the end of the stipended summer for all Summer FRG awardees

Faculty Fellowships (Summer Stipend, Fall / Spring at Full Salary, Academic Year at Half Salary) are awarded to tenured and non-tenured tenure track faculty in accordance with University Statute 4-05.10.

To apply for a faculty fellowship
, please follow the instructions below:

1) By no later than midnight, September 15th, complete Faculty Fellowship Application 091513.
    
    This on-line application will automatically close and be unavailable after September 15th.
2) By no later than midnight, September 15th, e-mail to FacFellows@fordham.edu:
  • Your Curriculum Vitae as a Word or PDF document named: LAST NAME, FIRST NAME CV13
  • Your Project Narrative* as a Word or PDF document named: LAST NAME, FIRST NAME PN13 
3) At the request of the University Research Council, please read the following statement before proceeding: Fordham University's University Research Council considers the award of a Faculty Fellowship to be a form of University investment in a faculty member's future productivity, and therefore has an expectation that an awarded faculty member both (i) return to Fordham University at the conclusion of the Fellowship period; and (ii) acknowledge his/her receipt of a Fordham Faculty Fellowship in any outcomes that result (e.g., publication).

FINALLY, PLEASE NOTE THAT All Faculty Fellows are expected to complete an On-Line Faculty Fellowship Summary Report regarding their progress and outcomes to date within 30 days of finishing their fellowship.

 
The Faculty Research Expense Program (FREP) provides tenured and tenure-track faculty with:
  • up to US $400 annually 
  • from July 1 - June 30 on a first come, first serve basis until budget depletion*
  • to pay toward any expense not a normal responsibility of your school or department
  • that was/will be incurred as a necessary cost of preparing a specific
     - scholarly publication/project; and/or 
     - application for an external fellowship or grant
    I.E., not general expenses of being a scholar: If you do not provide the information regarding your specific scholarly publication/project/application as requested below, that request will be denied. Furthermore, 
    the use of the word "project" above is to capture discipline appropriate outcomes equivalent to but different from standard publication, such as the production of visual or performing arts, amicus briefs, congressional testimony, etc.  It is not an exemption from the requirement that an expense be a necessary to realize a specific outcome.

If your intent is to purchase software, please check to make certain that Fordham does not already provide that software by clicking here.  Requests to purchase or reimburse you for software already owned by Fordham will be denied.

Clare Boothe Luce Funding at Fordham (through the generous support of the Henry Luce Foundation) provides grants to undergraduate and graduate women pursuing careers in science and engineering. 

Undergraduate Opportunities

Clare Boothe Luce Scholarships provide students in their junior and senior years with tuition, fees, room and board (beyond what is already covered by other awards).  If requested, recipients may also receive funds for professional development (such as a stipend for a summer research project).

Clare Boothe Luce Research Scholarships provide funds for professional development in the form of a stipend and a budget for research related expenses.

All highly qualified female applicants must:
 - be a US citizen;
 - NOT intend to pursue further education in the medical sciences;
 - have declared a major in Chemistry, Computer & Information Science, Mathematics, Physics, or Natural Sciences (the latter must have a concentration in one of the aforementioned areas).

Graduate Opportunities
Clare Boothe Luce Fellowships are available to highly qualified female students of US citizenship who are beginning their doctoral studies in Biological Sciences.  Fellowships provide a stipend, tuition, and fees for two years, and if requested may also provide funds for professional development (such as a stipend for a summer research project, which can be used for domestic academic travel, research expenses, childcare, etc.). 

A call for applications is sent each spring in late February/early March to theFordham e-mail addressof every eligible undergraduate and graduate student.
