Welcome to the Archbishop Hughes Institute on Religion and Culture. Established in 1995, the Institute’s mission is to play a thoughtful, intelligent part in exploring the relationships between religion and other aspects of contemporary life. In the intellectual tradition of the Jesuits and in the ecumenical spirit of post-Vatician II Catholicism, the Institute welcomes dialogue with other religious traditions and religiously based academic institutions on any and all topics where religion and modern culture intersect. Its primary focus will be on fostering Catholic-Jewish dialogue through its annual Nostra Aetate Dialogue series, and on religion and literature through its annual Russo Lecture.

We live in an era of increasing fragmentation, pervasive inter-religious tension and intolerance and the secularization of so many aspects of daily life. In most modern societies today, matters of religion are considered private and personal and not relevant to public discourse. The Archbishop Hughes Institute aims to throw open the doors on the subject of religion and culture, reaffirm its centrality in making sense of contemporary life, and return it to its proper place as a subject worthy of scholarly discussion.
