February 14, 2013. The Fordham HIV Prevention Research Ethics Training Institute is now accepting applications for the 2013 summer program. The year 3 program will be held July 7-17, 2013. January 25, 2013.
PRIM&R has issued a call for abstracts for their annual Advancing Ethical Research Conference, scheduled for November 7-9, 2013 in Boston, MA. Abstracts should fit into one of two categories: Programmatic, which describe novel or innovative approaches to the management, function, and operations of IRBs or HRPPs, or Scientific, which address empirical studies related to research ethics. The University of Cincinnati Center for Clinical & Translational Science and Training will be hosting the conference "Empirical Bioethics: Emerging Trends for the 21st Century" on February 21-22, 2013. Washington University in St. Louis will host a Training Institute for Dissemination and Implementation Research in Health from June 3-7, 2013. One of the most critical issues impeding improvements in public health today is the enormous gap between what we know can optimize health and healthcare and what actually gets implemented in every day practice. This training seeks to address this gap by understanding how to best ensure that evidence-based strategies to improve health and prevent disease are effectively delivered in clinical and public health practice. The 2013 Health Care Ethics Consortium of Georgia Annual Conference is scheduled for March 21-22, 2013 at Emory University. The topic of this year’s conference will be “The Politics of Caring: Ethical Issues of Distributive Justice in an Era of Scarce Resources.” Topics will include justice in the provision of mental health care, access to health care, and those who fall outside the health care system. The College on Problems in Drug Dependence (CPDD) has announced the inaugural meeting of an HIV/AIDS Workgroup during their annual meeting, scheduled for June 15-20, 2013 in San Diego, CA. This HIV/AIDS Workgroup has issued a call for abstracts that address issues relevant to combination HIV/AIDS prevention as well as the role of social and structural factors in HIV/AIDS prevention with substance users. November 29, 2012.
The Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues released an ethics study guide based on the Commission's investigation into the U.S. Public Health Service experiments conducted in Guatemala in the 1940s. This study guide can be accessed on the Bioethics Commission website.

NIH has released a statement indicating that NIDA and NIAAA will be functionally integrated, but not structurally reorganized as had been under consideration. NIDA and NIAAA will each retain their institutional identities while strengthening their ongoing efforts to work more closely with each other and with related research programs at other institutes and centers. The Journal of Sexually Transmitted Diseases has issued a call for papers for a Special Issue on "Combination Prevention for HIV," which includes an updated mix of new and existing prevention interventions such as traditional behavioral and structural interventions and biomedical interventions (e.g., prevention of mother-to-child transmission, medical male circumcision, PrEP, and treatment as prevention). The Y-Mind Sao Paulo School of Advanced Science has issued a call for abstracts for a research conference on the prevention of mental, emotional and behavioral disorders. The Office of Human Research Protections (OHRP) will be holding a webinar on November 8, 2012 titled “When PIs come a knockin’: Everything investigators want to know but are afraid to ask.” This webinar will feature Michelle Feige, MSW, Public Health Analyst with the Division of Education and Development, OHRP. The World Health Organization has announced its endorsement of the use of PrEP for HIV risk populations, and has suggested that countries wishing to introduce PrEP establish pilot projects to help public health workers better understand and realize its potential benefits. The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene has released new recommendations regarding the provision of antiretroviral therapy to allpersons living with HIV, regardless of CD4 count. Information about this new treatment recommendation can be found here.

November 3, 2011. With the support of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), the International AIDS Society (IAS) has established a research fellowship programme focusing on HIV and drug use, with the goal of contributing to advances in the scientific understanding of drug use and HIV, while fostering international collaborative research on HIV and drug use. The fellowship programme is awarded as a stipend of $75,000 in two categories: to a junior scientist for 18-month post-doctoral training, or to a well-established HIV researcher for an eight-month-long professional development training at leading host institutes excelling in HIV-related drug use research.
