Facilities
The field station has state-of-the-art equipment, research library, greenhouses, and housing in close proximity to organisms in the field. These facilities are available for research and educational programs for students, faculty, and visiting scientists.
 |
The McCarthy Laboratories:
The McCarthy Labs are housed in a 2900 square foot, wood-framed buildiing on Calder Lake. The laboratories include a complete analytical chemistry area, microscope lab, offices, and animal care room. The laboratories are also equipped with growth chambers, a nutrient autoanalyzer, gas chromatograph, high performance liquid chromatograph, carbon-nitrogen analyzer, fluorescence and phase microscopes, spectrophotometers, autoclaves, electronic balances, and a complete array of sampling gear. |
 |
Calder Hall:
Calder Hall is a 13,000 square foot, 27-room, stone mansion, which was formerly the Calder Family residence, built in the early 1900's. Today it is used as an educational and research facility with modern workspaces and full ADA / wheelchair access. It contains two seminar room, research library, herbarium, insect collection, research laboratories and staff offices for four faculty members, student study area, a full kitchen and dining area, and guest rooms for visiting scientists.

 |
Greenhouses:
The two large, temperature controlled greenhouses are used for plant and aquatic ecology experiments |
 |
Routh House:
The Routh House is a five-bedroom brick building constructed by Joseph Routh in the 1970's. Joseph Routh donated funds to Fordham University to establish an endowment in support of the research station. The Routh House is now used by the university for the Campus Ministry program, the Calder Summer Undergraduate Research program (CSUR), and houses the Vector Ecology Laboratories.

Lakeside Lodge:
This turn-of-the-century, 2600 square foot, log cabin is located on the south shore of Calder Lake. One of the original buildings on the property, this building is fully winterized and serves as the main administrative office and mailroom for the Calder Center. The lodge also houses a lunch room, computer facilities, and a quiet study area for students. The ground floor provides an equipment storage area, a lake-connected boathouse, and an on-the-spot teaching laboratory. An outside dock, adjacent to the Lodge, also provides boat access to Calder Lake. |
 |
Experimental Lake Facility:
The field station maintains a lakewater-fed experimental lake facility consisting of 26 large (5400 L) mesocosms used for experimental studies on trophic interactions and biogeochemistry. The ELF tanks are used by researchers and instructors. |
