This intensive class is designed as a platform for intermediate and advance level students to further develop their photographic production with an emphasis on generating documentary projects focusing on the people, culture, and architecture of Japan. Tokyo will serve as the starting point for students’ investigations in a journey that will take them from the cosmopolitan ward of Shinjuku to the center of youth culture in Shibuya, and from the cutting edge fashion districts of Harajuku to the temples and shrines of Asakusa. As they engage in photographic explorations, students will visit contemporary exhibitions and ancient collections. Course participants will also travel south to Kyoto, the nexus of traditional Japanese culture and history with approximately two thousand temples, shrines, and gardens. Visual stimuli will certainly inspire, as well a function as the backdrop against which to critically discuss the strategies that photographers utilize in communicating their interests.

This course conducted in Moscow includes work in acting, movement, dance, and Michael Chekhov technique, as well as Russian theatre history, a Moscow city tour and a survey of current performances in the Moscow theatre. Throughout the two weeks, the Moscow Art Theatre School will organize attendance at performances in Moscow Theatres.
The design courses will highlight the rich history of Russian theatre design and contemporary work, backstage visits, and a survey of Russian museums including the Theatre Archive at the Bakhrushin State Central Theatre Museum. There will be practical lessons in drawing and painting, as well as meetings with famous Moscow theatre designers. There will be visits to production departments of some of Moscow's theatres. Designers can take Theatre History, a seminar, and "Design for Chekhov Plays", where most of the attention will be dedicated to costume design, but scenography and light design will be discussed as well.
