Credit Courses

To meet the needs of students who have been accepted into the university but need to improve their academic writing skills, the IALC offers advanced writing courses for college credit: College ESL Writing I and II (6 credits each) are offered in the fall and spring semesters.  
Tuition charged on a per-credit basis.  Open to matriculated Fordham undergraduates only.

 College ESL Writing I (6 credits)
This credit course is designed for matriculated undergraduate students who need further ESL classes and who have been referred to the IALC by other Fordham departments.  In this course, students study writing skills and practice them by writing compositions in response to university level material to  learn to write clearly, accurately and with fluency on college level themes.  An emphasis is placed on correcting flawed grammar and usage.  The course makes the international student's entry into a full-time college program easier.

College ESL Writing II (6 credits)
This credit course is a continuation of College ESL Writing I.  Students write well-organized expository essays that defend a point of view, in response to university-level material.  There is a focus on helping students acquire the skills that teach them to analyze, to revise and to edit their own writing, as well as to read and analyze the writings of others.  An emphasis is placed on correcting any remaining flaws in grammar and usage.  Students also learn how to use the library facilities, and how to write a research paper. 
 

Non-credit Course

Writing for University Preparation
This course is for university graduate students who do not need credit but must fulfill an ESL requirement, as well as students who have tested into Level Six.  The course is designed to teach students the techniques used and the conventions followed in expository writing.  Students read and analyze selected materials (essays, articles, stories) and respond by discussing them and by writing compositions that relate to the themes of the readings. An emphasis is placed on correct grammar and usage.  Students learn how to use the library for the purposes of writing a research paper. Matriculating students who are required to take this Pass/Fail course must receive a Pass, based on their coursework and final examination, to be exempted from further ESL studies.
