description
German 1501 is an intermediate German language and culture class designed to expand and practice all four foreign language skills: speaking, listening comprehension, reading and writing. Students will learn to use German in all cases and tenses; to compare and negate; to use the passive voice and the subjunctive; and to express themselves in complex syntactical structure. Students will also expand their knowledge about life and cultures of the German-speaking countries: the German school system and economy; military and civil service; the way Germans travel and recycle; and how they discuss current events and the global market.
In this section, participants will have the unique opportunity to experience many of these issues first-hand by traveling to Germany during spring break. In cooperation with the Dominicus von Limprun-Gymnasium in Viechtach, Germany, the course will visit a Bavarian class of 14 English majors who will prepare a program for the stay. The Fordham students will design this program with them and thus have the chance to explore the issues in which they are particularly interested. For the majority of the visit, participants will stay with one of the students and their family. If there is interest, the course will go to Munich for two days before returning to Fordham. One week after the return of GERM 1501, the German students will return the visit and come to Fordham over Easter break. The Fordham participants will be expected to house them in their dorm rooms or their home.
