The course will examine the art, architecture, and culture of Rome over the various epochs of the city’s history: Ancient, Medieval, Renaissance/Baroque, through to the Contemporary period. Rome once ruled the entire Mediterranean world, and its cultural legacy looms large in Western civilization. Indoor class time will be minimal; Rome will be our classroom and participants’ primary mode of exploration will be site visits to monuments, museums, churches, and galleries. Students will participate in a number of cultural excursions including a visit to Ostia Antica and Orvieto and surrounding areas. There are no language or art history prerequisites, however participation in the course necessitates a healthy attitude towards exceptional amounts of walking. Prior to traveling to Rome there will be meetings to discuss readings and film screenings to serve as an introduction to aspects of Italian culture. This course satisfies the Fine Arts requirement of the Core Curriculum or either: Ancient, Renaissance/Baroque, Modern, or an elective credit in the Art History major and minor.
