Summer Opportunities

Campion Institute Summer Fellowships

The Campion Institute awards Summer Fellowships to select, competitive students who intend to use their summers to prepare and strengthen their applications for major external awards. For more information, click here.

External Programs

The following programs are open to all students (undergraduate, graduate, alumni) unless otherwise indicated.

Note: Not all of the following programs are scholarships or fellowships! Some are "all expenses paid" programs; others provide stipends and/or other benefits. Still others are listed simply because they are competitive and unique opportunities for you to enrich your education. All of the programs in this list should be seen as opportunities for you to develop personally, intellectually, and professionally, and thereby to boost your qualifications for other major awards.

American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES) Summer Internship Program

For enrolled students (undergraduate and graduate) only. Ten-week summer internship with an AISES partner agency (various locations). Must be an AISES member.

American Psychological Association Summer Science Fellowship (SSF)

For undergraduates only. Six-week placement in an outstanding psychology laboratory in the Washington, DC area; all expenses paid.

Center for Strategic & International Studies Internships

For students and recent graduates interested in public policy careers. Most unpaid; some stipends available. Fall and Spring semester internships also available.

Centralized College Internship Program

For enrolled students only. Six-week summer internship program in Washington, D.C., that focuses on leadership and hands-on public policy experience; also includes professional development and roundtable seminars with senior government officials.

CIA Undergraduate Summer Internship

For undergraduate students only. Must be a combination of one semester and one summer, or two summer internships. Open to students in various fields of study of significance to CIA.

The Council of American Ambassadors Fellowship Program

DAAD RISE Summer Internship

For undergraduates only. Interns in fields of biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences and engineering are matched with doctoral students in research groups across Germany.

DAAD RISE Professional Internship

For graduating seniors and current graduate students only. Career-building internships in Germany in fields of biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences and engineering.

DAAD University Summer Course Grant

For full-time students only. Scholarships to attend 3 to 4-week summer courses at German universities which focus on the literary, cultural, political and economic aspects of modern Germany. Also involves an extensive extracurricular program.

Defense Intelligence Agency Summer Intern Program

For enrolled students only. Ten-week appointments in positions involving analysis, research, report writing, oral briefings, policy development, program management, and computer applications related to the intelligence field.

Exceptional Research Opportunities Program

For undergraduates only. Summer research experiences designed to encourage students to pursue careers in academic science. Participation qualifies students to apply later for the Gilliam Fellowship for Advanced Study, which provides support for doctoral studies.

FBI Honors Internship

Must be an enrolled student at time of application. Ten weeks at FBI Headquarters in Washington, D.C.; interns matched to FBI divisions based on skills and academic discipline.

Pamela Harriman Foreign Service Fellowships

For undergraduates who have been accepted into the Department of State summer internship program. Provides stipend and placement in a summer professional position with the U.S. Department of State in Washington, DC, or the U.S. Embassies in London and Paris.

Koch Internship Program

Paid internships at non-profit organizations, guidance from a Koch Foundation mentor, education in the Market-Based Management framework. For students interested in non-profit sector and social entrepreneurship.

National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Summer Programs

For undergraduate students only. Placements involve students in meaningful ways in ongoing NSF research programs or in projects designed for the REU program. Students apply directly to an REU site.

National Security Agency Internships

Multiple internship programs for undergraduate and graduate students pertaining to different facets of the NSA's work. Mostly for STEM students.

National Security Agency Summer Language Program

Intensive 12-week summer language program for students of critical languages such as Chinese, Korean, and Persian Farsi; also involves apprenticeship to senior NSA language analysts.

The Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Summer Enrichment Program

For undergraduates only. Six-week summer program in Washington, D.C. involving course work and extensive extracurricular activities, workshops, meetings, and site visits related to international affairs.

ThinkSwiss Research Scholarship

For enrolled students only. Scholarships for students to do research in any discipline at a public Swiss university or research institute for 2to 3 months.

U.S. Department of State Summer Internship Program

For enrolled students only. Internships available in U.S. and abroad. Fall and Spring semester internships also available.

The Washington Center Intern Abroad Programs

For undergraduates only. Combines a study abroad experience with an internship. Program begins with a 10-day seminar in Washington, D.C. Fall and Spring semester programs also available.

The Washington Center Internship Programs in Washington, D.C.

Internships at a range of sites in Washington, D.C., related to students' interests, including governmental, nonprofit, for-profit and international organizations. Some funded internships also available through the "Competitive Government Programs."
