Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst Annual Grant Program (DAAD)
 
The DAAD is a publicly funded organization of higher education institutions in Germany that promotes international academic opportunities for students in the U.S. and Canada. There are a variety of research, study, and internship opportunities offered through DAAD.


I. Undergraduate Scholarship

Overview

This scholarship supports 4 to 10 months of study, thesis research, or internship in Germany (during the German academic year).


Award Details

The award includes a monthly stipend of
650, health insurance, as well as funds to defray travel and research expenses.

Eligibility

Applicants must be full-time students, at the sophomore or junior level, who have well-defined study, research, or internship plans. German language competancy is not mandatory, but applicants must still fill out the language evaluation form.

II. Study Scholarship

Overview

This scholarship supports a year of independent study or a master's degree program in Germany.

Award Details

The award includes a monthly stipend of €750, health insurance, as well as a flate rate travel subsidy (€850 from the U.S.).

Eligibility

Applicants must be graduating seniors or recent graduates (who have completed their degree no more than 6 years prior to the application deadline). Graduate students enrolled full-time are also eligible. Applicants in the humanities and social sciences need to have a good command of German.
U.S. citizens, citizens of Canada, and permanent residents are eligible; foreign nationals may also be eligible if they have been full-time students for at least two years at the time of applying.

III. Research Internship in Science and Engineering (RISE)

Overview

The RISE supports summer internships in Germany for undergraduates majoring in biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences, and engineering. The program offers opportunities for undergraduates to work at top research institutions across Germany.

Award Details

The award includes a monthly stipend of
650, health insurance, as well as accident and personal liability insurance.

Eligibility

Applicants must be full-time students who will have completed at least two years of their undergraduate degree before the internship. German language ability is not needed unless otherwise noted in the individual project descriptions.

IV. University Course Summer Grant

Overview

This grant supports three to four week summer courses at German universities that focus on German language and literature, as well as cultural, political, and economic aspects of modern and contemporary Germany.

Award Details

The award is approximately
€850 which covers tuition, room, and board. There is also an international travel subsidy of €300-450.

Eligibility

Applicants must be enrolled full-time and have at least sophomore standing at the time of application. U.S. citizens and citizens of Canada are eligible; foreign nationals may also be eligible if they have been full-time students for at least a year at the time of applying. By the start of the scholarship, a minimum of four semesters of college German (or the equivalent) is required.
