SHORT-TERM PROGRAMS


Welcome


Study abroad at Fordham is part of a long-standing tradition of Jesuit education that seeks to enhance student’s understanding of the world’s people and their interdependence.  Our goal is to provide students opportunities to gain a deeper understanding of other cultures and to help them incorporate a global dimension to their chosen fields of study.  As such, we offer one of the most extensive networks for full-term foreign study of any major university as well as faculty led short-term courses and programs at various destinations.  Our short-term programs include 3-6 weeks courses taught at various foreign destinations and campus-based courses with an embedded 7-10 days study tour.  The programs cover several disciplines: Art History, Business, Economics, Education, History, Italian, French, Medieval Studies, Political Science, Spanish, Theater, Theology, Urban Studies, Visual Arts.  All study abroad courses seek to maximize the unique curriculum opportunities a given destination offers both faculty and students.

July 2, 2010 - August 7, 2010




Fordham University's Liberal Arts Summer Program in London will feature five courses during the Summer of 2010 within the disciplines of Anthropology, Comunications, Medieval Studies, and Urban Studies from July 2nd until August 7th.

Through guided research, excursions and carefully selected field trips, the program’s contextualized curriculum considers the dynamic city of London as an integral part of the educational experience. Situated in London’s historic South Kensington, classes and student quarters at Fordham’s London Centre at the University of London’s Heythrop College are minutes from Kensington Palace as well as from the city's museums, theatres, concert halls and shops.  As part of the coursework and London experience, participants will take guided excursions and field trips in Kensington and beyond—to plays, galleries, films, and historic sites or to ethnic neighborhoods where cuisine and other cultural manifestations from Asia, Africa, the Caribbean and South America can be found.

Courses are open to Fordham and non-Fordham students who are eager to appreciate the balance of rigorous coursework, seeing their efforts spring off the pages into the physical reality of the city around them.  All courses are 4 credits.

China and the US in the
Era of Globalization


Guangzhou, China



This course studies political and economic developments in China and compares them with the United States.  It analyzes the future of Chinese-American political and economic relations. It takes place at historic Sun Yat-sen University, in Guangzhou (Canton), one of China’s premiere schools in China’s most economically vibrant city. It is in English.

The course features exciting field trips to important Chinese political, economic, and cultural sites: Hong Kong, Macau, Shenzhen (the first free market zone), rural village elections, new factories, poor peasant villages, government and Communist Party offices, newspapers and magazines, the casino industry, political and religious dissidents. It includes lectures by Chinese and American professors, and joint Chinese-American student classes, discussion, and study groups.

Le Flâneur in Paris

Paris, France
June 1-July 1





From the corpse strewn small crotte covered streets ofthe French Revolution to the arcades and grand boulevards of modern Paris, the figure of the flâneur, or the solitary urban wanderer, has intrigued authors, poets, philosophers, and artists alike. He (and sometimes she) has been seen as a figure of resistance to bourgeois life, a visionary, an anthropologist, a bohemian, and a dandy. This course will give an extensive examination of the figure of the flâneur in literature, art history, and philosophy, including works by Mercier, Rétif de la Bretonne, Balzac, Baudelaire, Manet, Zola, Courbet, Apollinaire, Colette, Benjamin and Calle, among others.

Summer Institute in Orvieto

This institute and its requirements from students will cover theoretical and practical issues associated with language, culture, power, and the spectrum of difference and their influence on mental health and counseling training and service delivery. It also exposes students to the everyday life of a people living in a different culture and who speak a different language. This exposure facilitates reflection on the power of culture, history, tradition, and language in psychological development and behavior.

Emerging Markets

Pretoria, South Africa
August 1-August 22



In this class students will collect and analyze economic and financial data on South Africa and compare it with similar data on other emerging markets as well as more established markets. In addition, students will also have the opportunity to interact with South African business and government representatives aswell as US representatives. At the end of the course students will attempt to determine the prospects for foreign equity investment in South Africa. The class will meet in the mornings from 9 am until 12 noon, Monday through Thursday. Students will be assigned to four teams that will meet in the afternoons from 2 pm to 5 pm, Monday through Thursday, to complete their assignments. Fridays are used for field trips.  The program is based at the University of Pretoria.

Spanish Tutorial
Granada, Spain
May 30 - July 2


This course will be open only to students of Spanish language.  Students will receive language instruction from professors of the University of Granada at their appropriate level of competency.  In addition, they will attend cultural visits and events organized by Dr. Lamas, who will also supervise their academic progress.  The course will be substituted for the correspondent level of Spanish language course at Fordham.  Classes will meet four hours per day, five days a week for a total of 80 hours.  The program is based at the University of Granada.  The city of Granada, a recognized World Heritage Site by UNESCO, is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It is the hometown of Federico Garcia Lorca, and a center of flamenco culture.
