PROGRAMS:
Many, but not all, of our semester and academic year study abroad partners offer
summer, winter, or other short-term programs. We recommend students to consider
these programs and to further research their options, which are many, at
www.studyabroad.com. Since there is no roster of approved summer/short-term
programs, before applying and submitting your application please confirm with the
Study Abroad Coordinator that the program you are considering will be approved.
ACADEMIC POLICIES:
All summer/short-term participants remain subject to the following academic policies
of Fordham:
- To secure necessary approvals and the transferring of credits, students are required to submit all application forms to ISAP on stipulated dates. Transfer students must make sure their projected study abroad credits do not exceed the number of credits required to receive a Fordham degree.
- To apply for federal or state aid for summer study, students must register for a minimum of 6 credit hours (this will reduce academic year eligibility).
- Major/minor advisor and the Study Abroad Director must approve courses taken abroad in advance.
- Grades earned abroad are recorded on a student’s transcript but are not calculated in the student’s GPA. A grade of C or better in each course is required for credits to transfer. Normally, Pass/Fail and/or one-credit courses will not transfer.
-
Students are responsible for ensuring that no duplication of classes taken at Fordham occurs and that all applicable guidelines for major/minor requirements have been met. Core curriculum courses are not to be taken in a summer/short-term study abroad program.
STUDY ABROAD PAYMENTS and FEES:
Summer/Short-Term Study Abroad program fees are not billed to/paid by Fordham
University. The Fordham Summer/Short-Term Study Abroad Application
includes a $65 non-refundable fee (all checks or money orders should be payable
to Fordham University).
LANGUAGE:
Students applying to programs in non-English speaking countries must remember that
programs often times administer language placement exams. Since a poor placement
may require a student to do course work abroad that amounts to duplication of
courses already taken at Fordham, applicants must weigh the situation carefully as
they consider their language studies and decide on a study abroad destination.
Remember: the more you bring to a program language-wise, the more
progress you will make academically and personally.
STUDENT CONDUCT:
Fordham University students enrolled in study abroad programs are expected to
comply at all times with the University Code of Conduct and all other rules,
regulations and policies contained in the Student Handbook and other University
publications. It is important to remember also that participants are expected
to conform to the rules, policies, and standards of the host institution and
program.
TRANSCRIPTS and PROGRAM EVALUATION FORM:
Students must secure transcripts required by the study abroad program(s) they
apply to and, upon completing their term abroad, request the host institution to send
a transcript to the Director of Study Abroad at Fordham University.
TRANSPORTATION:
Students normally arrange and pay for their own travel to and from the study abroad
site. Some programs provide airport meet-and-greet services; look for details in
acceptance materials.
INSURANCE:
Students are required to show proof of appropriate medical and accident insurance
and to secure additional insurance when required by the program.
