STUDY ABROAD IN AFRICA: GHANA
Program: University of Ghana / CIEE
Location: Legon, Ghana
Is This Program Right For You? This is not your typical study abroad program. Ghana presents a unique opportunity for a wide variety of students interested in the political and economic challenges facing sub-Saharan developing nations first hand or West African cultural practices in various musical and dance forms. So when thinking about study abroad you can join those in Europe, or you can get a distinctive experience seeing the true side of Africa.
This program provides an opportunity for students from all academic disciplines to live and study in Ghana, learning firsthand about the country and its people, while continuing to pursue their own academic goals. These goals are achieved through integrated study with Ghanaian students, internships, and immersion into the cultural and social life of the university and the surrounding community.
The University of Ghana is located on a park-like campus in the city of Legon. The University has an enrollment of about 23,000 students and a faculty of over 720. It includes faculties of agriculture, arts, law, medicine, science, and social sciences; a school of administration; three agricultural research stations; and institutes for adult education, African studies, archival training, international relations (primarily for graduate students interested in foreign service), journalism and communication, medical research, population studies, and statistical, social, and economic research.
The Courses/Program: All students are required to take at least one course in a subject related to Africa from the core curriculum and a Ghanaian language course (Twi). CIEE students take four additional courses chosen from the regular offerings at the University of Ghana. With the exception of the required six-week Twi language course, CIEE participants are taught alongside University of Ghana undergraduates and are required to undertake a full program of courses, including all prescribed assignments and written examinations. Students interested in the developmental challenges facing Ghana today can enroll in the Developmental Track Studies Teaching methods at the university normally involve a mixture of lectures, tutorials, seminars, and, in the sciences, laboratory classes.
Students will notice striking differences between their home educational system and the Ghanaian system. The Ghanaian system, following the British model, allows students greater responsibility and initiative in a less structured environment. Courses may involve relatively few contact hours each week, since they are intended as a starting point and focus for a great deal of individual study.
The program can assist participants in organizing an independent study project, or finding a suitable community service project. Students must receive permission from Fordham University to enroll in an independent study for credit. Students who want to volunteer or get involved in a community service project are encouraged to do so, but will not receive credit for such activity. Previously, students have volunteered in hospitals and health clinics, the Ghana National Museum, urban and rural NGOs, day care centers, elementary and junior high schools, and a refugee camp.
Housing: Housing is included in the program fee. Students live either: in home stay with a Ghanaian family, in an international student residence on-campus, or in off-campus apartments. Meals are not included in the program fee and are the responsibility of the student (except with the home stay option). Meals may be taken at either the university cafeterias or at outside vendors.
