|
|
Program: School for International Training (SIT)
Location: Botswana, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Mali, Morocco, Senegal,
South Africa, Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda (see below for country-specific programs)
Is This Program Right For You? SIT Study Abroad is the pioneer of experiential, field-based study abroad. More than 80 semester and summer programs provide options around the world – including many in developing countries and several that examine aspects of contemporary Europe rarely explored in study abroad programs. To date, more that 30,000 students have returned to their home colleges equipped with academic insight, strong field research skills, essential intercultural competencies, and the perspective to understand critical global issues.
The Courses/Program: Students take four courses while participating in an SIT program: Intensive Language Study, Thematic Seminar, Field Study Seminar, and an Independent Study Project.
Intensive Language Study: SIT Study Abroad offers language instruction through qualified private teachers, language institutes, and universities. Students participate in three to six hours of daily formal classroom instruction, discussion, and field exercises.
Thematic Seminar: This interdisciplinary course focuses on a theme (such as culture and development). SIT Study Abroad draws lecturers and instructors from host-country institutions and the professional community, taking advantage of carefully selected local resources to provide a variety of informed perspectives.
Field Study Seminar: This course trains you to learn effectively in a non-classroom environment and prepares you to develop, implement, and present your Independent Study Project. You learn the most effective and appropriate field study methods to use in your host country.
Independent Study Project: In the final month of your semester abroad, you pursue an Independent Study Project related to the theme of the program. The culmination of your project is typically a 20-40 page paper that you present at the end of the semester.

Housing: Through a homestay, you become a member of a family and share in its daily life. This opportunity facilitates cultural immersion, helps develop language skills, and provides a context for your academic learning. Many programs offer more than one homestay, sometimes in both urban and rural areas, to provide you with a comparative view of family life. In each country, a local SIT Study Abroad homestay coordinator arranges homestay placements after screening and approving each family’s suitability.
When not living with homestay families, you stay in lodgings chosen under the guidance of the academic director. Accommodations may include guesthouses, educational institutions, hostels, or small hotels.
