Program: IES Study Center and Universitat Wien / IES
Location: Vienna, Austria
Is this Program Right for You? Founded in 1950, IES Vienna offers a rigorous academic program for semester and full-year students who desire to study in a German-speaking country. Students can focus their studies on courses relating to the whole of Europe from the perspective of its center, where differences in politics, economics, culture, and social traditions between the East and West are most apparent.
The IES Vienna Center is located in the Palais Corbelli, an elegant 18th century palace in the heart of Vienna, and is just minutes from an array of museums, theaters, and other major cultural attractions that have bestowed international fame on Vienna. Students have a range of excellent IES course offerings to choose from. Students with advanced-level German may also take courses at the University of Vienna and, for music students with advanced-level German, at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna.
The Courses/Program: IES Vienna usually has 100 to 120 students who enroll in a 4 credit German language course (geared to each student's language ability) and four other courses for a total of 16 semester credits. Language learning is enhanced through housing arrangements, internships, extracurricular activities, and contact with staff and faculty. The distinguished IES faculty is drawn from various Austrian institutions of higher learning and top universities in Central and Eastern Europe. Students with less than two years of college-level German or its equivalent enroll in a German language course and the English-taught IES courses.
IES Vienna encourages all students enrolled in the German-taught curriculum to take a portion of their courses at the Universität Wien (University of Vienna). Full-year students may elect to take the majority of their coursework at the University during their second semester. The University offers a wide variety of courses in the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. IES Vienna regularly offers writing tutorial support to students enrolled in university courses. The number of semester credits awarded for courses at the University is normally two.
IES Vienna encourages music students with an adequate command of German to enroll at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, which offers a variety of lecture courses and seminars in Music History, Theory and Composition. The number of semester credits awarded for these courses is normally two.
Housing: Students are offered housing in private residences throughout the city, in independent apartments, apartments shared with an Austrian landlord or residence halls with Austrian students. Usually, two or more IES students live together. Roommate preferences are accommodated when possible. In the residence halls, students are housed in doubles with shared bath; there is a kitchen on each floor of the residence hall which is shared by all students on that floor. IES covers housing costs beyond the end of IES courses for students enrolled at one of the Austrian universities.
