STUDY ABROAD IN EUROPE:     CZECH REPUBLIC

Program: Charles University / CIEE
Location: Prague, Czech Republic

Is This Program Right For You? The program is intended for students who have an interest in the Czech Republic and Central Europe, as well as in the political, social, and/or economic transformation from state control to democratic market-based systems.

Established in 1991, the CIEE Study Center at Charles University in Prague has two main goals: to provide a broad and challenging academic program which gives students the opportunity to learn about subjects related to the region, and to provide the experience of living in the setting on which their studies are focused.

Charles University is the oldest university in Central Europe and was founded in 1348 by the Czech King Charles IV. It is the premier institution of higher education in the Czech Republic. Today, it makes use of more than a dozen facilities throughout the city, and has no central campus. Charles University enrolls nearly 40,000 students in 17 faculties, with a teaching staff of 3,000.

The CIEE Study Center in Prague is located in the Vyšehrad neighborhood of Prague. Vyšehrad is a historical neighborhood in the Prague 2 section. The location of the CIEE Study Center is at the top of one of Prague’s highest hills within medieval castle walls in a beautiful park-like setting

The Courses/Program: The program offers students a series of specially designed courses in such fields as history, economics, politics, culture, social issues, literature, art history, and cinema studies. Although there is no language prerequisite for participation in the program, students are required to take a Czech language course as part of their course load. In addition to language study, students normally take four area studies courses taught in English.  Courses taught at the CIEE Study Center in Prague are country and region specific.  In order to reap the maximum benefit from the program, it is strongly recommended that interested students have a background course in European or East/Central European studies, in any of the following disciplines: history, sociology, literature, economics, political science, or language.

Class size ranges from five to twenty students per course. While lecturing prevails as the most common teaching method, most professors welcome discussions as well as questions. Additionally, some instructors use videos, slides, and field trips throughout the semester as teaching aids. Courses meet twice a week for 1.5 hours (or once a week for 3 hours).

Housing:  Housing is included in the program fee. Students have a choice of housing and are placed on a space-available basis. The housing options in recent semesters have included: Vyšehrad Dormitory, a dormitory in the historic Vyšehrad section of the city which houses mostly foreign students; Hostivar Dormitory in the suburb of Hostivar, which houses a majority of Czech students; or a homestay with a Czech family. The homestay option provides an excellent opportunity for immersion into the local culture. Students who have chosen homestays in the past have been extremely pleased with their experience. The homestay option needs to be arranged well in advance. In the dormitories, breakfast is provided daily (including weekends). In the homestay, breakfast and dinner are provided by the family.  Please note that housing is allocated on a space-available basis, and the dormitories offered to the CIEE program through Charles University are subject to change. Travel times and distances (to and from the CIEE Study Center, as well as throughout Prague) will depend on the housing that you choose, and may range from 15 to 50 minutes each way.
