Program: DIS - Danish Institute for Study Abroad
Location: Copenhagen, Denmark
Is this Program Right for You? DIS is an internationally renowned study abroad institution affiliated with the University of Copenhagen and recognized, supervised, and financially supported by the Danish government. DIS offers a number of specialized semester, full-year, and summer programs in a wide range of academic fields, with a large number of academically challenging and intellectually stimulating courses focusing on European themes and issues and utilizing Copenhagen's strong research environment and educational resources.
DIS is located in the very center of medieval Copenhagen. It is housed in a beautifully restored building constructed in 1798 and protected by the Danish Preservation Act. The building houses administrative offices, the DIS reference and study library, student lounges, computer labs with Macs and PCs including free e-mail and web access, student advising and information services, architecture studios, and a few classrooms. Most classes are held in University of Copenhagen classrooms located nearby, and at other universities.
The Courses/Program: The DIS curriculum includes courses which cannot be studied elsewhere or which can be better studied in Copenhagen due to its academic resources. Classroom teaching is strongly enhanced by an extensive program of course-integrated, hands-on field studies, comparative field projects, and study tours in Denmark, Europe, and Russia. The program seeks to offer students opportunities to acquire solid academic training, to increase their knowledge and intellectual awareness of the world, and to sharpen their analytical, communication.
DIS offers the following academic programs: Humanities & Social Sciences, Politics of the European Union, International Business & Economics, Child Development & Diversity, Architecture, Pre-Architecture, Interior Design, Marine Biology & Ecology, Molecular Biology & Genetics or Medical Practice & Policy. Participants are required to take core courses of the program of their choice. They are also expected to participate in the program-related study tours. Beyond these requirements, students are free to select any combination of courses across the various programs (except core courses in programs other than their own), provided that required prerequisites are met.
Housing: Participants can live in DIS-arranged housing, i.e. with a Danish family or with Danish and other foreign students in a European-type student residential hall, a kollegium. European universities usually have no campus, and the kollegiums used by DIS and other schools are located around greater Copenhagen. In most cases, students have their own room and bathroom and share a kitchen (including cleaning responsibilities) with about 15 other students, mostly Danish. Some students will share a kollegium flat including a bathroom and kitchen with another DIS student. Participants can also arrange their own housing.
