PROGRAMS IN EUROPE:     FRANCE

Program: French Immersion Program
(French and European Studies, literature, arts) / American University Center of Provence
Location: Aix-en Provence, France

Is this Program Right For You? Formally recognized by the French national Ministry of Education, the American University Center of Provence provides a high quality academic and cultural experience for American college and university students. As a full-immersion French program, AUCP combines an all French-speaking environment, individual homestay, language partner, personal interest activity, and community service with rigorous course work taught by French university faculty.

The American University Center of Provence has the distinction of providing its students with an entirely French-speaking environment. In addition to the cultural immersion furthered by experiential learning requirements, program participants commit themselves with a formal language pledge to total French language immersion. AUCP students speak French in all curricular and extra-curricular circumstances: in their classes, with their French host families, with their French friends, as well as within the AUCP student group.

Students and home universities recognize that failure to respect the language pledge may lead to dismissal from the program.

The Courses/Program: On-site program courses are taught by committed local experts and tenured professors from the Université de Provence; courses focus upon French language and literature, political science and contemporary issues, cinema, art history, studio art, and European civilization. On-site course work is supplemented by optional direct enrollment for one or more classes at the Université de Provence or Institut d’Etudes Politiques.

All AUCP courses are given in French. This authentic French classroom experience is made accessible to non-native speakers by integrating French-as-a-second language methodology within each professor’s subject matter expertise. Nonetheless, students are assumed to have an “advanced” level in French (minimum of two years college French, or equivalent).

The small average class size of AUCP courses makes for close personal interaction and guidance. Courses demand considerable outside work and follow-up. Regular attendance is required. While mid-semester vacations allow for sensible traveling, the focus is upon serious academic work and in-depth involvement in the local community.

While all AUCP course work is related intimately to each student’s personal cross-cultural experience, the mandatory course French Practicum provides an essential link between academic work and direct French cultural experience.

Students are required to participate in weekly community service activities.

Housing:  All AUCP students live with carefully selected French families in a home-stay arrangement, one student per family.

Duration/Deadlines:
• Fall Semester: early September – mid December / Application Deadline: April 15th

Qualified students select four upper-level academic courses from offerings in the Faculté des Langues, Lettres et Communication (Université Stendhal), the Faculté Des Sciences Sociales (Université Pierre Mendès), the CUEF, or a combination thereof. Students choose from a variety of subjects such as art history, French literature, cinema, economics, political science, international relations and psychology.  In addition, all Level II students take a semester-long, advanced 4-credit course, Travaux Pratiques, in written and oral French through the CUEF and for which they complete ethnographic research projects.

All students are provided with accommodations in French households throughout the city. Households chosen to participate in the program represent a wide range of incomes and familial arrangements, such as a couple living in the city to a suburban family with young children.  For many students, living in a French household and commuting to school on the local trams and buses are a significant part of experiencing local life. Is One of These Programs Right For You?  Founded in 1973, the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) Study Center in Paris is located on the Right Bank’s Boulevard Haussmann. The CIEE Study Center offers two distinct programs to students depending upon their language ability: the Contemporary French Studies program, for students who have completed two to four semesters of French language study; and the Paris Critical Studies program, for students who have at least five semesters of college-level French language study or are at the high intermediate or advanced level in their language study.

The goal of the Contemporary French Studies program is to enable students to improve their ability to communicate in French through intensive language instruction and interaction with Parisians.  Students study 20th-century French literature, film, history, philosophy, and art history.  These courses focus on modern/contemporary France and French Studies.

The Courses/Program:
The Contemporary French Studies offers courses in literature, philosophy, art history, film studies, history, and/or international relations taught in English and French.  Courses focus on major events and trends in France, with an emphasis on Paris. Whenever possible, courses include walking tours and site visits in Paris.  The Contemporary French Studies program courses are specifically designed for CIEE participants only and taught by French and American professors. Thus, class size will depend on program enrollments for each semester. The instruction in CFS courses varies, from lecture-style to group discussion, to question-and-answer.  All courses are taught at the CIEE Paris Center.

The Paris Critical Studies Program focuses on critical theory taught entirely in French.  Students should have a demonstrated interest in critical theory and coursework in one or more of the following areas: philosophy, literary analysis, cinema studies, film studies, anthropology, or French literature.  The program offers a critical approach to contemporary French thought in the fields of literature, film, philosophy, art, and aesthetics.  There is an intensive French language program prior to the start of the semester’s courses.  Students have a high degree of autonomy.  Students also have the option to enroll directly to classes at the University of Paris III- Sorbonne-Nouvelle.

Housing: The Contemporary French Studies program is designed to maximize student contact with and immersion into the French language and culture. Therefore, the standard housing placement is a shared living situation with a French person or family, where students will have his or her own furnished room and will share kitchen, bathand living areas.   Housing accommodations are part of the program fee.

Students in the Paris Critical Studies Program have a high degree of autonomy and freedom to select their own housing.  They will receive assistance from CIEE in securing an apartment to live in.  Students must pay for their accommodations above the program fee.

Program: L'Universite de Paris-Sorbonne / CUPA
Location: Paris, France

Is this Program Right For You? The Center for University Programs Abroad, ("CUPA") actively seeks highly motivated students who are ready to embark on an exciting academic adventure.  CUPA offers such students a challenging program of study designed to meet individual interests and requirements.  CUPA provides an opportunity for personal growth through a variety of intellectual, cultural and social challenges.  If you are academically and linguistically well-prepared, have an inquisitive mind and a flexible attitude, the CUPA program might be a great match for you!

CUPA's Paris offices and classrooms are located in a 17th-century building in the heart of the Left Bank. They are close to the Luxembourg Gardens and the animated cafés of Saint-Germain des Prés. They are a short distance from other academic institutions and places of historic interest.

The Courses/Program: The Paris university system offers excellent courses by qualified faculties. Since the system and its teaching methods are quite different from those of virtually all American colleges, CUPA helps students adjust to those differences and assure that the courses students select will meet the credit requirements of the most demanding American universities.

CUPA offers an exceptionally wide range of academic options to its students through affiliations with many of the different universities and other academic institutions of Paris, including graduate schools. CUPA can also place its students in a number of programs in the arts, including music, dance, theatre, mime and the fine arts. As a result, a CUPA student could be enrolled in several different universities or institutes during the course of the semester or academic year.

CUPA has formal contracts with the Universities of Paris III-Sorbonne Nouvelle, Paris IV-Sorbonne,Paris IX-Dauphine and Paris X-Nanterre, as well as a special agreement with the Institut Catholique. Students may be able to take courses at many of the other Paris universities and at the Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales, the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (for advanced students), the Institut d'Etudes Politiques, the Ecole Normale Supérieure and the Ecole du Louvre.

In addition to the courses available at various French institutions, students may choose among several program courses taught in French by academics with finely developed teaching skills.  Courses are available in the following fields: Advanced Composition and Stylistics, Art History (for which museum visits are an integral part), French Political History and French Contemporary Thought.  With sufficient interest, the Center can create new courses. CUPA students may also undertake independent study projects with the approval of the directors and the student's home university advisor.

Housing:  A popular aspect of the CUPA program is that it offers students a choice to live with a French family or make their own living arrangements.  The decision each student makes concerning housing will be considered definitive and may not be changed during the semester.  Therefore, students are advised to carefully weigh the advantages and disadvantages of each option.  Host Family placements are made on the basis of housing questionnaires completed by students.

Duration/Deadlines:
• Fall Semester: mid September – mid January / Application Deadline: March 15th
• Spring Semester: mid January – late May / Application Deadline: October 15th

Requirements:
• 3.0 GPA
• Good command of both written and oral French
• Successfully completed at least one advanced college-level French course with a grade of B+ or above

Program Cost Includes: Tuition, housing, sponsored field trips and most meals.  For more information:  www.cupa-paris.org. Program: L'Universite de Paris-Sorbonne and IES Study Center / IES
Location: Paris, France

Is this Program Right For You?  This IES Paris program combines a rigorous curriculum of French language study with impressive course offerings in the Humanities, Economics and the Social Sciences, with a special focus on the Francophone world.  Each semester the program enrolls 80-100 students, who register for a minimum of 15 credit hours each semester (maximum 19); selecting from IES courses, university courses, and the internship seminar.  IES courses are taught exclusively in French by native French faculty.  Courses in grammar, phonetics, and translation develop students’ ability to communicate effectively in French.

The IES Center is located on rue Daguerre, one of the city's oldest market streets near the Montparnasse train station and within walking distance of the Latin Quarter. The neighborhood surrounding the Center is a lively residential area, bustling with cafés, restaurants, theaters, and shops. IES Paris is committed to encouraging students' integration into the French community and to developing their understanding of the French language and people.

The Courses/Program:  IES offers courses in the areas of Economics, History, Literature, and Political Science which encompass historic and contemporary interests, particularly current political and economic issues in France. Field study activities in areas such as Art History, Business, Cinema, Paris History, and Theater take students outside the classroom to learn from the rich environment that composes daily Parisian life. IES also offers students a unique opportunity to focus on issues of the Francophone world by providing courses on Art, Cinema, Francophone History, Gender and Literature. Field study is an important component of Francophone Studies courses and includes visits to relevant museums, cultural institutions and various ethnically diverse neighborhoods in Paris. Students who enroll in these courses are encouraged to participate in at least one of the optional IES subsidized field trips to Marseilles or Andalusia.

The courses that students are able to enroll in depend on their language competence and the result of an interview with an academic advisor at the beginning of each semester.  Student advisors are IES faculty members who are familiar with la Sorbonne and l’institut Catholique.  They recommend university courses to meet each student’s particular needs.  Students with a good command of the French language are strongly encouraged to take one or two courses at one of the outside IES-partnered institutions in Paris such as la Sorbonne.

Housing: IES Paris arranges housing for students in the homes of French hosts.  Hosts provide students with daily breakfast and two to three evening meals per week. Other meals can be taken at university cafeterias and inexpensive restaurants in the area. Every student has a private room and usually only one student is placed per homestay.
