Program:  European Union Program / IES
Location:  Freiburg, Germany

Is this Program Right for You?  The European Union is the institutional framework designed to coordinate the political and economic policies of its member states. It is also a community of nearly 500 million citizens and one of the largest markets in the world. As the European Union continues to grow in size and influence, understanding it becomes key to understanding Europe and our world. With its central location in Germany, Freiburg makes an ideal starting point for the exploration of this region, and also offers a rich cultural experience in a picturesque university town characterized by a gothic cathedral and architecture from the middle ages. Freiburg is a picturesque university and medieval cathedral town with a rich educational heritage. Now a modern, cosmopolitan city of 200,000 people, Freiburg's skyline is still dominated by the famous gothic Münster (cathedral), and small streams (Bächle) dating from the Middle Ages still flow along the narrow streets in the city center. Though small enough that almost everything is within easy walking or biking distance, Freiburg is also large enough to offer a rich cultural life of its own.

The Courses/ Program:  The IES European Union Program offers outstanding opportunities for Economics, Political Science, International Relations, and International Business majors. You will study the development and activities of the EU in a breathtaking location, with field trips to sites important to the affairs and interests of the European Union and its plans for the future. Courses emphasize the historical and institutional development of the EU, its internal policies, issues of culture and multiculturalism, and its relations with outside nations. A major component of the EU program is field study, and because of its prime location in the center of Europe, Freiburg affords easy access to the major EU offices of governance and to capitals and other important cities in Western and Eastern Europe. As part of the program's field study, you will visit key EU organizations in Western Europe. Additional field study trips through Central and Eastern Europe allow students to visit newly-accepted EU states such as the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Poland.

IES European Union Program courses are taught in English (except for one German-taught course in Political Science) by German and other European faculty. All students enroll in one German language course, a mandatory integrative seminar, and three other IES courses for a total of 16 credits per semester. The mandatory EU Studies Integrative Seminar provides the context in which coursework and field study are integrated, so that all students develop an understanding of the current issues and major players in the EU today. With written approval of the home school, students with advanced-level German proficiency may take an additional IES course in lieu of an advanced-level German language course.

IES European Union students participate in a Model European Union simulation. Over a long weekend, they assume the roles of the foreign ministers, prime ministers, and press corps of the EU member states to debate issues of current concern to the European Union. The Model EU brings together students’ classroom-based academic knowledge and their first-hand experience through IES field study. At the end of the simulation, students issue a communiqué on their deliberations. The Model EU concludes the EU Studies Integrative Seminar and is the capstone experience of the semester.

Program:  Ludwig Maximilians Universitat Munchen / Wayne State University
Location:  Munich, Germany

Is this Program Right for You?  The Junior Year in Munich is an intercollegiate program of integrated study abroad at the renowned Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU) and America's oldest study abroad program in Germany.  Open to students with junior standing from any accredited college or university in the US or Canada, the Junior Year in Munich has facilitated the successful academic integration and cultural immersion of undergraduate students at a German university for more than 50 years.

If you really want to know Germany, you have to live and breathe it for a year. JYM’s philosophy of integration allows you to experience Germany as only an insider can, and defines how JYM is different from other programs. Surrounded by the sights and sounds of German 24/7, you'll soon be dreaming in German! JYM awards $50,000 in scholarships annually, making study abroad in Germany an affordable reality.

The Courses / Program:  JYM students are admitted to the LMU as fully matriculated students and therefore may take courses in any of the LMU's 170 degree-granting subject areas (except for law and medicine).  These areas include: arts and sciences, language and literature studies, history, cultural studies, art history, political science, education, media and communications studies, philosophy, psychology, social sciences, chemistry, mathematics, physics, and business administration.  JYM can also assist qualified students to attend classes at the Technische Universität München, or other academic institutes and universities in Munich.

JYM also offers specially designed courses for our students that ease the transition between the US and German university systems. German language instruction takes place each semester at the JYM institute. Elective area studies courses provide educational opportunities not normally offered at the University of Munich, and provide a desirable bridge between the US and German university systems for some students. Colloquia and Independent Study provide a framework for students with an approved research agenda.  All instruction at the JYM institute is in German.

Internships: The Junior Year in Munich, in cooperation with CDS International, makes it possible for students to combine studies at the university with a semester-long internship in Sommersemester for which they receive academic credit.  JYM can also help students find internships while they are in Munich for which academic credit is not given. JYM students have obtained internships in the fields of marketing, publishing, the automotive industry, health care, e-commerce, economic development consultancy, government, and foreign service.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The academic calendar in the Germany is different. Since their Fall Semester runs from October to April, Fordham students are welcome to apply only for the Full Academic Year or Spring Semester.

Housing:  To encourage maximum immersion in the language and culture of Germany, students live alongside German students in university residences (primarily in the Studentenstadt Freimann, aka StuStadt).  More than just a dormitory complex, all kinds of student services and opportunities to make new friends are provided in the StuStadt by the StudentenwerkMünchen, from restaurants and pubs to courses in photography and foreign languages.  StuStadt is about 10 minutes by U-Bahn from the city center.  Public transportation in Munich is state-of-the-art, and provides quick and convenient access to the entire city and the outlying areas. Many students also purchase second-hand bikes to take advantage of Munich's extensive designated bicycle paths.
