Program: University College Cork / Arcadia or IFSA-Butler
Location: Cork, Ireland
Is this Program Right for You? University College Cork (UCC) offers the best of traditional scholarship and cutting-edge technology. The university is Ireland’s leading research institute and is known for its programs in Archaeology, History, Music and the Sciences. UCC is located in the laid-back city of Cork, near the southern tip of Ireland. This seaside town’s history as a trading port is evidenced in the architecture and layout of the city. Named the European Capital of Culture for the year 2005, this pleasant city is one of Ireland’s most accessible and can be explored on foot. There is plenty to explore among the city’s quays. Cork radiates culture and is home to many arts festivals, including the Jazz Festival and the Cork Film Festival.
The people of Cork are notoriously hospitable and talkative, and you’ll find that carries over into the welcoming nature of the university. UCC has over 15,000 students, over 1,500 of which are international students from a diverse group of countries. The UCC’s historic campus has many great amenities for students to take advantage of. The Boole Library is named after the first professor of Math at UCC and the developer of Boolean logic, has volumes on all subjects available at the college as well as journals and electronic resources. Students have access to computer labs with internet access for all students, diverse food outlets, a student travel office, a bank, ATM facilities and extensive sporting facilities. Students also have access to the UCC Mardyke Arena which has a swimming pool, gymnasium and climbing wall and outdoor fields for soccer, rugby, and cricket, among other amenities. The Students’ Union is the nucleus of student activities, campus events and entertainment.
The Courses/Program: UCC is a great place to study Irish culture, especially in the special Celtic civilization courses developed for visiting students during the fall pre-sessions. The music department at UCC is world renowned, and full year students can earn a certificate in traditional Irish music. The mathematics department is another outstanding choice.
Cork also offers an early start option for fall and full year students. This option is mandatory for any Fordham student who wishes to attend UCC for only the fall semester. The early start program allows students to take a short course prior to the fall semester for an extra 3 credits. Once the fall semester begins, early start students enroll in regular university courses. Early start fall semester options include archaeology, literature in Ireland, history and modern Ireland, music in Ireland, marketing and management, and Irish ecosystems. Full-year students can earn a Certificate in Irish Studies if they complete sufficient coursework in early and medieval Irish, modern Irish, archaeology, history and folklores. Students who attend for the spring semester can earn a Certificate in Irish Political Studies.
Students pre-register for classes prior to arriving at UCC. Thirty ECTS (“European Transfer Credit System”) is the typical full-time credit load for a student per semester. Credits for classes vary and students may take anywhere from 3-6 classes per semester to make up a full-time course load.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The academic calendar at UCC is different. Since their fall semester is considerably shorter than ours, Fordham students are welcome to apply for the Full Academic Year or for the spring term. If a student wishes to attend UCC only for the fall semester, they must complete the Early Start Program.

In most cases, you can expect to share a bedroom with another program participant and have three or four other students in your apartment sharing kitchen and living facilities.
