STUDY ABROAD IN EUROPE:     NORTHERN IRELAND

Program: Queen's University Belfast / Arcadia or IFSA-Butler
Location: Belfast, Northern Ireland

Is this Program Right For You?  Queen’s University Belfast (QUB) is the centerpiece of a vibrant and revived Belfast. With the peace process well underway, the commercial benefits are to be seen in all the new and renovated buildings. Belfast’s history and its manageable size make the city itself into a laboratory for academic and experiential learning. Top-quality teaching and research, an active campus environment, and opportunities to fully integrate into QUB student life are just a few of the qualities that you may find attractive about Queen’s.

Outside of studies, you’ll find plenty of activities to occupy your time. QUB has a lively Students’ Union that sponsors a host of campus clubs, societies, and social events. The University’s sports facilities, which are first-rate among British and Irish institutions, include swimming pools, numerous playing fields, weight rooms, squash courts, and other sporting amenities.  When you want to venture off-campus, you’ll appreciate that QUB enjoys an excellent center city location within walking distance of many cultural attractions and downtown amenities.  Throughout Belfast you’ll discover an impressive entertainment scene and an array of fascinating cultural attractions. You’ll also be ideally situated to participate in the annual Belfast Festival, which is based at QUB and distinguished as one of the world’s major international arts extravaganzas.

Courses/Program: The University has earned an international reputation for academic excellence in all branches of engineering, history, physics, music, English, archaeology, and Irish studies. You’ll find outstanding courses in each of these areas, as well as in many other areas of the humanities, sciences, social sciences, law, and education.  Along with comprehensive course offerings, you may appreciate that the University houses one of the best music schools in the United Kingdom. If you favor history and politics, you’ll find a selection of unique courses in the politics of divided societies. In whatever area you concentrate your studies, you’ll benefit from top-quality instruction and will enjoy the flexibility to design a curriculum that includes courses from various departments. Students are required to take a full course load, which normally means three courses per semester.

With proportionately fewer international students (1,000 – only 300 of whom are North American – on a campus of 23,000) enables study abroad students a high degree of both academic and residential immersion in the Northern Irish culture.

Housing:  You will be integrated with Irish and international students in a modern residential complex.  Housing is a fifteen minute from campus and has single rooms with shared kitchen facilities. A brand new convenience store and restaurant located in the middle of the facility is a real plus.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The academic calendar in the UK is different. Since their fall semester is considerably shorter than ours, Fordham students are welcome to apply only for the Full Academic Year or for the spring term.

Program: University of Ulster / Arcadia or IFSA-Butler
Location: Northern Ireland

Is this Program Right For You? The University of Ulster is the largest university on the island of Ireland. It has four campuses: two in or near Belfast (Belfast and Jordanstown), the Magee campus in Derry, Northern Ireland’s second largest city, and one in the north, in the regional town of Coleraine. Regardless of which campus you may choose, you’ll find a vibrant and growing university which provides every opportunity for you to integrate with Irish, British and other international students.

The University’s comprehensive academic offerings and variety of four campus locations are popular among local students, though not as well known to those from North America, and you’ll spend many memorable hours gaining insight into the rich cultural tapestry of Northern Ireland’s dual traditions—Irish and British, Catholic and Protestant, Gaelic and English.

Throughout the University, you’ll find a notable range of sport facilities, entertainment venues, eateries, and other student amenities. Additionally, each campus houses a students’ union that offers an extensive mix of social, political, cultural, and sporting activities that you'll be welcome to join.  Each campus places you within reach of some of Northern Ireland’s most impressive natural and urban treasures.

Courses/Program: You’ll find a wide variety of high-quality course offerings in the humanities, art and design, business and management, engineering, information technology, life and health sciences, and social sciences. If you want to take particular advantage of your time spent in Northern Ireland, the University offers a large number of engaging courses in Irish history, politics, language, andliterature. Like many North American students, you may find the University’s offerings in peace and conflict studies to be particularly compelling (this program is offered at the Magee Campus).

You can choose to study at any one of the University’s four campuses. Each campus will give you the flexibility to choose courses from any department that interests you; however, you need to pursue all of your coursework on one campus only. Most classes are taught in a lecture format, with an emphasis on supplemental tutorial sessions. For a full-time course load, you can expect to take three courses per semester or term.

Housing:  Students are guaranteed housing on each campus, in self-catered student housing that includes shared kitchens, living rooms and bathrooms. (If you choose to study at the Belfast Campus, you will be housed on the Jordanstown Campus, within easy commute to Belfast.)
