PROGRAMS IN EUROPE:     SCOTLAND

Program:  University of Edinburgh / Arcadia or IFSA-Butler
Location:  Edinburgh, Scotland

Is this Program Right for You?  The gorgeous capital city of Scotland offers breathtaking views, hundreds of years of history, and a great nightlife. Edinburgh is one of the most architecturally beautiful cities in Europe, but you'll find much more than just lovingly preserved buildings. The city has the advantage of a compact, convenient layout and warm, welcoming people, yet with a cosmopolitan atmosphere. The Scottish Parliament opened in 1998, making the city once again the center of Scotland’s political life.

The city also offers plenty of pubs, trendy cafes, vegetarian restaurants, and small boutiques, as well as great clubs. Edinburgh is the U.K.'s festival city and home to the famous International Festival every August. The city hosts other film, music, and art festivals in the spring and summer as well. Edinburgh is a great base for travel. Catch a train to any large city in England or Scotland; Edinburgh is just one hour from Glasgow and St. Andrews, and five hours from London. Or head north into the beautiful Scottish Highlands.

The Courses /Program:  The University of Edinburgh, founded in 1583, is one of the largest universities in the U.K. and has an international reputation for academic excellence and research.  You'll find particularly outstanding programs in sociology, languages, English, micro-electronics, and biotechnology. The university also is a major center for computer-related studies, and there is excellent computer support across all disciplines.

Whether you enroll for the full academic year or for a semester, you must take a regular full-time program of academic study, which normally consists of three or four courses per semester.  Students who are majoring in art history, psychology, and English literature are usually allowed to take only one upper-division class per term in that subject.

Housing:  Arcadia and IFSA-Butler students live in flats or in Pollock Halls. The flats are scattered around Edinburgh, while Pollock is located approximately twenty minutes from George Square, the center of campus. The flats are self-catering, but Pollock has a mandatory meal plan.  Students on mandatory meal plans are billed separately after the programs begin.

Program:  Glasgow School of Art / Arcadia or IFSA-Butler
Location:  Glasgow, Scotland

Is this Program Right for You?  Fine arts students will find both excellent training and an entire city of inspiration at the Glasgow School of Art, one of only a handful of free-standing art schools in the U.K. You'll be able to round out your technical training while enjoying a lively, active campus in Scotland's cultural capital. GSA's student council organizes dances, film viewings, and a host of cultural, social, and athletic clubs. With just 1200 students in all, GSA offers you personal attention and the chance to connect with students in other disciplines.

A cosmopolitan city with a stellar arts scene, Glasgow offers great culture and entertainment possibilities. This city of 800,000 is home to the national Scottish companies of ballet, opera, orchestra and chorus. The city also boasts two repertory theatres and the Glasgow Film Theatre, which runs only limited-release films. Visit the city's galleries and museums, including the reconstructed home of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, the famous graduate of the Glasgow School of Art.

The Courses /Program:  GSA offers enrollment in three faculties: Architecture, Fine Art, and Design and Craft. You'll focus completely on your craft in studio classes rather than mixing them with liberal arts classes; you'll also study in only one medium. You'll enroll in the required course given by the historical and critical studies department for grounding in art history and theory. Professors incorporate tutorials and discussions to give you a good counterpoint to studio work. GSA offers extensive programs in hard-to-find areas like jewelry-making, product design, and textiles, as well as more common fine arts courses such as painting, sculpture, and photography.

Housing:  Students attending the Glasgow School of Art for the full academic session, or starting the first terms are guaranteed housing in the student residences. These are less than five minutes from the campus building. Each flat has six individual rooms with communal living areas and shard cooking facilities.

Full year students receive housing preference. If you cannot be placed in student residence accommodation, you live in non-university-operated housing.

Location:  St. Andrews, Scotland

Is this Program Right for You?  University of St. Andrews, established in 1411, is famous for teaching in the humanities, but it is equally committed to the sciences. Along with the largest medieval history department in the UK, the university has a strong reputation in biotechnology, computer studies, neuroscience, and optoelectronics. The university is also among the last of the old European universities to remain integrated with its town.

Although St Andrews is not a campus University, it has grown and developed with the town and is now comfortably integrated. Owing to the size of St Andrews, students feel they belong here and enjoy the benefits of studying at a highly residential University where academic and social lives intermingle. Visiting students have very good opportunities to really experience the Scottish way of life and get to know the local people.  In addition, the university hosts parties, balls, concerts, and sporting events and its location in St. Andrews offers ample opportunities for outdoor activities like hiking and backpacking.

The Courses/Program:  St. Andrews has a strong academic tradition in the humanities, particularly art history, classics, religious studies, history, and philosophy. It also boasts great departments in the sciences, specially in the biotechnology, computer science, and optoelectronics departments. The university owns the largest optical telescope in Britain and the most sophisticated lasers in Europe.

Visiting students generally take two to four courses each semester, depending on course weight.
